Tactical rifle in .308 - Savage 10 FCP SR?

Post by Ed9362 » 19 Jan 2016, 2:36 pm

Hi guys,

I am in the market for a new tactical rifle in 308. I have looked at a few and have decided on the savage 10 fcp sr.

I like it because of the threaded barrel and 10 shot mag, it also seems to get good reviews for out of the box accuracy.

I don't want a tikka because I have two already, and Howa varmints don't really turn me on.

Is there anything else I should checkout before I take the plunge on the savage?

Which barrel 20 or 24inch?
What do you mean by tactical? (It means different things to different people)
Also Look at the Model 11 Scout; same mechanically, but 18inch, with a forward mounted rail for scout scope (not pic rail though), brake fitted (can remove), and open sight are a bonus..rear aperture, and adjustable cheek piece on the stock...

Cant go wrong with the Sav

Amen, brother, tactical means something different depending on who you are.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Thanks Brett it looks cool but I think it is a little out of my price range.

I'm not into the scout rifle, I have a main 30/30 for that. I want a LR rifle which has a tactical feel and look.

I was keen on the ruger precision rifle but I don't really want to wait 6 months an unknown rifle also I'm not keen on the 2o" barrel in 308

Please define what you mean by 'tactical'.

If you don't like the two most reliably accurate rifle under $1500 available then you might be stuck.

That savage doesn't look too tac to me.

So, tell us a budget and explain what you mean by tactical.

By tactical, I mean a law enforcement type rifle, I like the ten shot mag, the big bolt knob and the threaded and fluted barrel, the threading will make it easy to fit a brake. The savage also seems to get good reviews for accuracy.

Don't get me wrong I love tikkas but I already have two so I don't want another one. I have owned howas and would buy another one, just not now.

It appears that the savage is all that is left in my price range

I have heard both good things and bad about Savage rifles. Maybe a gradual build is a way to go. Use a rifle you own or buy a donor rifle/used barreled action. Get the action trued up and rebarrelled; have the bolt handle you want fitted. Buy and fit a stock and DBM kit...... etc....

Not necessarily as expensive as you may think to go this way.

New Lithgow 102 maybe? Just add aftermarket 10 shot mag when available.

This is a little more affordable:

I have one. Mag-fed, bolt action .50. It shoots through schools ;) They offer it as a full rifle so you don't have to worry about the AR15 lower nonsense. But I don't see it in stock so give them a call. It's a small compan

None of your mates will ever ask if you brought enoughgun.com :)

Also great for Bar Mitzvas.

Thanks, like 10 replys and you are the only sensible one.

I hadn't thought about the lithgow. Maybe I will have a look at it.

Either way the savage looks out. The supplier has none and they said the wait will be up to 12 months. Maybe I will wait until the ruger comesouy

So the Barrett M95 is a little over the top....How about the Colt 2012CLR ?
I've owned one and they are great shooters straight outta the box, nice crisp trigger and adjustable in all the right places.

Yes, the M95 is heavy but if you bend the knees when lifting it's not so bad and you don't want to be carrying it along with 2 full mags very far :D

Yep, nice little rifle and good value for money. I picked one up a few weeks back from Horsley's for $880 including bag, rings and Nikko Panamax scope though I've since replaced the scope with a Bushnell AR 4.5-18x40. Grouped very well with factory OSA 55gr Blitzking and I'm about to pickup some 55gr Zombie Max projectiles to work on some loads. I'm sure you'll enjoy Howa :)

I can't remember the prices but it sounds like the Remington XCR or SPS tactical might fit what you're looking for.

Shouldn't be crazy expensive.
