Don't worry about the marks in the stock mate,,, they only serve as a reminder to its heritage and history.
And they also add to its character.

When I did mine, I got rid of quite a few of the dings because I carved and reshaped the original stock, but the others I left in it to serve its heritage.
When I bought mine (as a teenager) it came from an old croc shooter.

Only if you want a "show piece" do you get rid of all the dings.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
I've come to realize that,,,,, the two most loving, loyal, and trustworthy females in my entire life were both canines.

You hit the nail on the head,.... "aussie icon".....

From an era when things were a bit harsher in life, but simple when it comes to firearms. The old conversions came in all shapes and sizes from the 303/22 falcon right up to 303/375....then there was the Epps variants, and a few real home grown jobs that were down right weird. My first ever centre fire at the prime age of 11 was a 303/25 on a No 1 Mk 3 action.

You have to give it to the early aussie gunsmiths, like Don Black Snr and Jack Hotchstat, they would try anything with the then "army" surplus... god the amount I've seen converted over the years, and lets not forget Sportco Australia that literally did hundreds of thousands of them....you couldn't own a military calibre...lol.....so lets get around that by designing our bloody own.

And they worked well.

I can remember as a kid my father and uncle armed with 303 Brit aussie conversation/calibres feeding the masses and hordes when we went away, and hand loading the used cartridges at the dinner table that night. I've seen shots pulled off with them that even by todays standards are incredible. If you were real lucky and you had enough money, and knew a "smithy" that could put a scope onto them, (most didn't).well then you were really up there.

And as I've said in another post somewhere, if only these rifles could talk....

Simpler when it came to everything. So much less political bulls**t crawling its way into every facet of life.

People have got it so good right now they have to find things to complain about. They just keep screaming until they get more warm milk and cotton wool.

The Enfield sometimes had this issue where the firing pin would fire but not engage the round, we had to pull that rectangle bit (sorry don't know what it's called) at the back backwards with pliers to "re-cock" it, and give the trigger another squeeze. Dodgy for sure!

I would love to get one one day, where is the best place to look?

Dud rounds are pretty common with surplus ammunition, happened to me at the range when I was firing some of the P.O.F ammo built in the 60s (might of been made earlier, not sure). The beautiful thing about the enfield and rifles like it, is the ability to pull back the cocking piece and fire again without cycling the action.
