New member, getting back into shooting

Post by scotty87 » 29 Mar 2016, 9:07 am

Hi all,

Just got my rifles back from my LGS after storing them for a year while I was trying to sort suitable safe storage, not an easy thing when you live in share houses.

I have a Howa 1500 .308 sporter and a BRNO fox 2

Image

Hoping to do some work on the Howa this year, bed and fit a Boyd's nutmeg stock I picked up years ago and cerakote the barrel, action and trigger guard and floor plate.

The BRNO is near perfect as is, has a period Hakko 4x scope on top that is almost as clear as my vortex and great for the ranges I shoot it at. Might bed the action on it once I've done the Howa. Hoping to get a good load developed for it, have benchmark 2 and 55gr spitzers.

Joined this community as you all seem a pleasant bunch, looking forward to posting as the rifles and my shooting of them progress.

Welcome, Scotty!

I do like the Howard and really like the Brno fox2, good choices. I'm assuming you hunt? or is targets your thing?

Havent hunted yet, Howa has not been blooded though I'm sure the fox 2 has taken its share of game. Im hoping to get my NSW game licence this year, an email to the DPI pointed me in the direction of Australian deer association or SSAA for hunter accreditation in QLD, haven't chased it up with them yet.

A Hakko scope :o :)
You don't hear much about them. I got a pair of their binos and they are pretty good, if heavy.
Good Hunting mate

Cheers mate,

Scope was one of my old man's from before the buy back so it's got some year on it.

Very nice rifles.
I have the exact same Howa in .308 and topped off with a Lynx 3-9 x 38 Scope.I had to sand the stock down to stop the barrel from touching in 3 places (out the box). But aside from that its a brilliant rifle and has taken more than its share of game.
Its my one rifle that gets used for almost everything and gets thrown around like an old rag and still works without missing a beat.

I initially went with ... 'you get what you pay for'.

But, the Howa / Smith & Wesson / CMC ... seems like value for money ?

( Mind .... It ain't no Winchester ! )

I have a Winchester in .375 and in .308, and I have to be very honest, when it comes to accuracy, the Howa seems to outshoot the Winchester every day of the week.
Not that I would ever knock my Wins, they are very well made and very nice weapons. Hoping to get an Over Under 12g Win latter in the year.

Got them both sighted in at Ripley on Saturday, got the .222 shooting alright but couldn't get anything decent out of the .308 but that might have been me, I hadn't shot it in over a year.

Stopped in at qge on the way home and dropped some coin on dies and some hornady 165gr SPBT pills, going to try work up a load with benchmark 2 as it's what I have at home for the .222, if I can't get it shooting with benchmark I'll probably buy some adi 8208.

Reloaded 60 rounds for the .222 last night starting at 22.5gr of benchmark 2 and working up in .2gr increments every ten rounds to 23.4gr weighing and trickling every charge. Kept them to 2.130" OAL, using 50gr nosler soft point pills. Going to test them out on my next RDO.
