10 Round mags

Post by WayneO » 18 Apr 2016, 11:45 pm

I see a lot of guys sporting 10 and sometimes even 15 round mags on their bolt action rifles. I have been hunting for a few years of my life, and to be honest I have never found the purpose to have an extended mag under my rifle that just gets in the way and catches on things. Is there a practical reason for these larger mags, or is it mostly a because i CAN thing?

Depends on what you're shooting. For varmint style shooting (which is more prevalent in the states but sometimes happens here) where you set up over a patch of ground that's densely populated by your chosen game and shoot as many as you can before they get the hint and head elsewhere a larger capacity magazine comes in handy.

For the majority of traditional hunting we do in Australia the larger mags just add extra weight and as you said they catch on things. Horses for courses.

Good for hunting pack animals ( pigs dogs etc ) but not really needed for your typical deer and such, comes in handy for target too if thats your thing

plinking, its handy to have a full mag with lots of rounds,
hunting, if its larger game on a stalk you might only get one chance to get one, possibly 2 shots off,

So yes, situation dependent

Only bolt action I have with a 10 round magazine is the No4Mk1 SMLE. As for the autos, well they might hold 30 rounds, but that don't mean I put 30 in them.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

The only 10 round mags I've used specifically for bolt actions and liked the look and function of, for larger caliber rifles was for the SMLE.
Don't like the look or function of say the 10 round mags that are availble for my bolt action howa 1500 308w, for me it would just piss me off getting in the way and snagged on bush.
I guess some people like them and buy them tho, which means $$$ for the people making and selling them.

Thanks guys, I thought it was just me getting older and more cantankerous.
Yes my .303's all have 10 round mags, but that's just the way they come and I would never try and change that.

My .22 magnum has a 9 round flush fitting mag which is brilliant and doesn't get in the way.

Though I did buy a 10 round mag for my .22LR (savage Mkii) and have found that it does get more in the way than the 5 round mag that came with it. So mainly I use the 10 rounder for plinking and target practice and the 5 rounder for when I shoot bunnies.

If you come across a mini plague 10 rounds doesn't last long. If you find a good rabbit permission that hasn't been shot for years you can pop 4 or 5 sitting next to each other with 22 subs.

I have had in the past (when I was young and stupid) needed a 10 round mag when among a mob of pigs. I bought one for my new rifle knowing I may need it one day. For now I just use the 5 round supplied with the 243 W as, it is usually the maximum allowed on ranges that do allow magazines. I bought a 10 round mag for the Savage 22 lr as it will be used lurking by rabbit runs with quiet ammo.

There is a button at the end of the tube mag which the 11th round presses and turns the rifle into an automatic right? :sarcasm:

I've got an original '73 Winchester with a 26" barrel and full length mag, she holds 17, but don't tell anyone! ;)

Yeah, I replaced the 3 round mag on the Tikka T3 with a 5 shot and find that's ample, fits reasonably flush etc and use the 3 round as reserve... Works for me.

I got 10rounds mag for my Tikka and found that it is much more comfortable to shoot while sitting or standing as my weak hand is in more natural relaxed position holding the rifle under the bigger mag.

You hold the bottom of the actual magazine as you shoot?
