Where to fire black powder cannon?

Black powder rifles and pistols, reloading black powder, and other information. The smoky stuff.

Where to fire black powder cannon?

Post by Pom » 09 Nov 2013, 1:07 pm

G'day all,

I'm thinking about getting into some black powder stuff, stating a little black powder cannon project is really catching my interest.

It's dawned on me though, where can you actually fire one of these things?

Guess you can't say you're going hunting with one

I've never seen one at a range... Can you just turn up and start sending canon balls down range or is it an event based thing only?

Not really my scene, but I think you'll need to find a club which does cannons are part of their lineup.

Legalities aside, not sure all of the will want you firing a cannon on their range.

Technically it's just hunting with a black powder muzzle loader?

On the subject of "cannons" though, we're only allowed a 50mm ball firing one right?

No big stuff?

Ha ha.

I can see some guy now, bitching about how people use muzzle brakes at the range.

Then you turn on with your cannon and flood the range out with smoke

We've had them from time to time at our range.

Yes I think you'll need to find a Black Powder club at least.
We (B/P shooters) are all a bit, umm, wild at heart, and most would welcome you.

One that "appeared" at our club was 1" diameter, lovely little replica, shot well to 100 yards.
Contact Graeme Forbes, at Forbes wholesale, he'll know the law.

You may be playing with fire. ;)

Most smokeless powder shooters would tell you to piss off if you set up shop next to them

Hmm, that's an interesting point. It's licensed like one, so why not use it like one.

An email to the firearms registry might be in order...

I'd be a bit pissed if someone set up a cannon and started billowing smoke all over my bench

Giday there, I have been at the SSAA Belmont in Brisbane while they have been shooting black powder cannon
It looked like lots of fun, I believe that is or was a semi regular thing, that was a couple of years ago though.

What that in addition to the regular SSAA stuff do you know?

Could you just turn up or was it special event days only?

If you're any where near Hillend north of Bathurst, they run a Black Powder 'Rendezvous' each year, or at least they used to.
Plenty of Cannon and Mortar to be seen there in action.
When you can drop a Ball into the top of a 44 gal drum at 100 yds, you'll be accepted.
