Recoil - Marlin 45-70

Post by DrDerpy » 07 May 2016, 9:29 am

Hi all
Been a while since I posted.
When i first joined I was looking to get a Remington 7600 and make a few mods , but wiser heads on here told me to look elsewhere so I did.
My first rifle purchase was a used Marlin 45-70 (before Remington started manufacture) and it is a nicely finished piece, I just have some questions about the ammunition.
Obviously Leveraction make the 275gr/325gr ballistic tips and normal "fatties" come in up to 400gr.
My shoulder are a bit "so -so", are there any type of precautions I should be taking when firing this thing, I have been told they can have a fair bit of kick in them.
Should I be strapping my dominant shoulder first and placing some kind of gel rest in there somewhere?
The stock on the gun is good and has that rubber piece on the end of the stock but from what I am hearing it might still kick hard.

Give it a crack standing first, it'll allow your body to absorb some of the recoil rather than just your shoulder, and go from there might just be one of thoss things, theres heaps of gel pads rubber recoil pad replacements etc its a personal thing :)

15 year old kids used it in battle.

I'm not going to make fun of you if you are sensitive to the recoil, everybody is different. I sometimes get a slight twitch with handguns. But there is no reason to be afraid to try it out.

shoot it plenty, shoot it often, not off the bench.
Proper stance and hold will do a lot for your shooting enjoyment...

Free Recoil of ADI loads vary from about 40 to 57ftlb force for all projectile masses,
325gr around 42 to 44 for max loads

Compared to 308win max loads all projectiles that vary from 13ftlb to 21ftlb force...

So yes, she'll give a decent tickle... if your shoulder if iffy, maybe consider letting it go and replacing with a 30-30 of similar form, either older or current manufacture...

Oh I have nothing against loud noises and vibrations (I have worked with explosives) I just have a disdain for when my shoulder makes an absolute crunching sound when I don't particularly want it to :D

I had / have the slight twitch with handguns as well man, mostly with the magazine fed ones, the revolvers seem a lot safer for some reason.
Maybe I just have a phobia of mag loaded handguns - but I did cut myself on a desert eagle and when it was ejecting the shells one hit me in the forehead and in the safety glasses - beautiful looking gun but unsure if I would own one.

Google, "Past Recoil Protection". Mine is very good. You just might have trouble deciding on which model, that's all.

Marlin 444 has even more muzzle energy and they are a soft progressive push more than a kick. The Marlin has good weight and balance so you will not feel like you have been kicked by a horse.

They are a nice rifle…..I better go get it out of the safe and fondle it….. :-)

If the stock is hollow consider filling it with lead shot. Have a look behind the recoil pad. The extra weight should help.

Recoil will be stiff, but to me not painfully so. I'd equate it to a 20 gauge with high brass out of a field gun, single barrel pump.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Simplest thing will be start with lower velocity, lighter projectile loads.

A 50gr heavier projectile and 200fps velocity might not sound like a lot but it makes a sizeable difference on recoil.

Light and slow to start will be much gentler as you get accustomed to it.

Yep. More velocity + heavier projectile + lighter rifle = pain in shoulder. (More recoil)

But those French rifles were only dropped twice each.... that 577 was dropped itself about 30 times....
