Bolt Maintenance on Savage 65M

Post by jshooter » 29 Jun 2016, 5:31 pm

Hi Guys,

I've just inherited an old Savage Model 65M from my grandfather. The rifle is in good condition but the bolt is a bit sticky. My only gripe is the bolt is not remove able without removing the action from the stock.

Does anyone have any idea for how to grease up the bolt without removing the action?

Yeah owners manual would be good, a brass brush, or rag wouldn't hurt behind the bolt lugs ( go easy with brass brush ) if theres a gunk build up, then a smidge of oil on the bolt body, if that doesn't work then somethings going on, get someone with some experience to look at your brass

The model 64 is listed as a Semi Auto, I'm hoping grandad had the proper paperwork or at least you do if this is the case. A few pics of the action would help to identify exactly which rifle it is cause if it's a semi and you don't have the right paperwork you could end up in a world of hurt with the Police.

My mistake, Model 65M.

I've contacted Savage but they don't have any to supply. Maybe a trip to a gunsmith may be in order

I'm not familiar with the 65M but is that big of a deal to remove the action from the stock once to give the bolt a refresh?

From a Google picture looks like it's just a few lug screws.

Once it's done you should be able to clean/oil the bolt on an ongoing basis while it's still in the action for a good while between removing it for a service.
