Dealing with cross dominance

Post by stockliman » 01 Jul 2016, 12:41 am

Hi all.

I just wanted to aee if anyone else had cross dominance issues and how they dealt with them?

I'm right handed and left eye dominant.

Seeing I'm a new shooter it was recommended that it would be easier to shoot clays left handed. I gave it a try and it seemed fine.

So I'm thinking down the track away from clays to rifles. For rifles without a scope,I'll go the left handed route and for rifles with a scope,I go right handed. The gun does feel awkward only when i crack the barrel to eject cartridges. The actual mounting and firing the gun seems fine and under control so do not have any concer from a safety perspective.

I dont particular want to walk around with glasses hindering my field of vision as I'm not shooting rifle targets or skeet/dtl.

Cheers

get a air rifle and a practice at home.

Thats the problem, if you're cross dominant you tend to end up sighting across the rib rather than down it

I'm right handed but neither left or right eye dominant. My problem is I struggle to maintain a strong right eye focus so i still close my left eye. works well for me with rifles and pistols but not so great with shotguns, still trying to work out a system for me

Yeah they make special clear dots that stick on ya glasses for this particular problem but I couldn't be f***ed worrying about that crap, a bit of tape in the right spot has the same effect and it's hardly noticeable on the glasses and costs nothin. :D

Mate it's just a bit of clearish tape on the LHS of my Shooting Glasses, all you do is move you finger around the left eye whist wearing the glasses and when you see only 1 barrel instead of 2 or 3 which is where the issue is with Eye Dominance it's hard to work out where you are going to be shooting, anyway once you work it out put some tape there and test it by looking down the rib, if you only see 1 barrel you should have it in the right spot, if not move it until you do, the piece I use is probably around 10-15mm in size.

If you have a look in that link above I posted you will see all sorts of variations on this idea and how to fix it.
