Storage of unused Spare Barrel.

Pretty self explanatory. I have a brand new blue 24" fluted .308 Howa barrel and I was wondering about how to store it without regular oiling so it doesn't rust. What should I use as a preservative? Could I just use bearing grease? Or should I give it a good clean with say G96 and then use a regular gun oil in excess. Or perhaps use linseed oil as it will dry sticky and not run off at all.

Yea righto. That's probably not a bad idea. I also thought about oil then wrapping it in that preservative oil infused brown paper like my whidden dies came in.

I might do that. As I have enough grease to sink a ship and wax paper is easy to get.

I've had a 2nd set of shotgun barrels, that I probably will never use .... stored in my safe, for more than a few years.

I'm confident that the 'atmospheric conditions' within my safe are 'right' and my choice of a corrosion preventative ( Lanox ) is sound.

.... zero issues to date.

Its worked a treat on my 65+ year old enfield spares...once you get them clean

then wrap in plastic.

It worked fine for God only knows how many .303 s that were stored that way.
In fact every now and then one pops up still in the original grease and wax paper from that era.
There was one advertised on "used guns" about 2 months ago.

Ifs it's going to be long term it's got to be grease. Not sure how glad wrap would react to oil over a longer period of time, especially a mineral oil. As mentioned, plenty of old .303's stored for decades in grease and wax paper that come out looking like new.

Lanoline. A soaking of sheep grease will get the moisture off it.
