Tonights Fun - S&W 460XVR

Post by brett1868 » 12 Jul 2016, 10:04 pm

After a very long wait for permits, I finally picked up my high calibre pistols today. Mounted the scope then headed out to the range for some familiarization shots. After 30 shots from the 460 I switched to a Desert Eagle 44 which felt like a 22 in comparison :) Excuse the rough editing but you'll get the idea of the power this thing has, damn shame we can't shoot the 500 S&W or 50AE. Video is 3 shots from 5, 3rd I tried for a slow motion effect then a still frame of the flash then the target. Group was shot at 50m and isn't too bad considering the eye relief on the scope and my failing eyesight.

The joy of a .45cal, 200gr projectile departing a 8.38" barrel at 2200fps is an awesome sight to behold :D

Would love one of them next year to upscale from my gp100. Need to wait out the 1 year to be allowed to make another purchase :( .
My local range is setting up gallery and has hinted at getting a 500s&w and having a separate members ammo price compared to stupid gallery prices like some do so I have fingers crossed on that one.

Brett......what are you soft? off a rest???
come oooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnn

No seriously awesome, just awesome, take a screen grab of the flash!!

I've though about chambering a rifle in either the 460S&W or the 500S&W, and the 50cal sound more interesting, but the 45 is not far behind, going by ADI max loads (other brands may load hotter??), the most 'powerful' (highest muzzle energy) loads compare as follows for a 3.8lb revolver;

460S&W - 335gr / 37.5gr / 1849fps / 2544ft.lb(muz.en.) / 55ft.lb.force(f.recoil)
500S&W - 385gr / 41.0gr / 1788fps / 2733ft.lb(muz.en.) / 67ft.lb.force(f.recoil)

Good times :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

I did a little searching and found some lever actions chambered in .460Mag & .500 from the Bighorn Armoury in the U.S. I got all excited till I saw the prices, $2699 US for the cheapest .500 S&W. There's a few single shot rifles available but they don't interest me. I'll man up and shoot without the rest next trip to the range, was going to have a crack one handed last night but was running short of time (cough).

I'll have to ask the missus to stop rubbing the back of my head during sex, it's getting a bit thin back there :lol:
I could feel the heat on my face from each shot, the walls in the bay tended to exaggerate the noise. The looks on peoples faces was fun to see along with the numerous questions of wtf is that thing. Had so much fun last night, I want to go tonight but have to get prepared for a quick trip bush Friday night to get the 50's setup for Mildura in Aug so I'll have to wait till next week. Only 14 shooting nights before the missus gets home so I need to make the most of them :D
