Worst cartridge/rifle you've owned ?

Post by bigpete » 19 Jul 2016, 4:33 pm

Just out of interest what's the worst cartridge or rifle/shotgun/pistol or combo of the above you ever owned ?
For me it was a winchester model 70 featherweight chambered for 223wssm. Rifle itself was lovely, but the light barrel combined with the super hot cartridge led to a gun that couldn't shoot a group to save itself. I couldn't get rid of the damn thing quick enough ! If it had have been chambered for a normal calibre I believe I would never have sold it. As it is I'll never own another firearm chambered for any of the wsm/wssm range !

"Worst" rifle? Ergonomically it's the Mosin-Nagant. So bad I own two of them an M91/30 and an M44. Cartridge wise I'm more in a quandary. I want to say .32ACP, but I love the Colt Model 1903 and you did specify rifle cartridge. So I'll go with the 17HMR just because it's more pricey to shoot, not that it is a bad round.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Years & years ago, I was given a Bentley 12 gauge pump action. Absolute garbage.

I think it ended up having an affair with an angle grinder and ended up in useless pieces (can't be reused).

I once bought a Springfield .45 Longslide (like in the 1st Terminator movie). I think I put 100 rounds through it and couldn't sell it quick enough to a movie lover.

My first shotty was a Franchi 500 (gas operated) semi auto. It was ridiculously fussy about its fodder and was a world champion at jamming. Traded it in on a Mossberg pump. You could stuff a dead tomcat into that action and it'd still work!

For me its my mosberg plinkster 802 in 22lr.
Feeding issues, extraction issues, likes the expensive ammo. Wandering zero,
Works well as a golf club but thats about it

Winchester Lever Action 30/30. Sorry to all the fans out there, but just didn't like the action or the calibre.

PS. It was given to me, so I also gave it away to a mate who loves it!

Cheers Baz.

I found it to be pretty good for the price, I got one for the kids and it's had a couple of cases not extract but I'm still happy.

When ya doing a brick a day poping bunnies in central vic. Reliability and accuracy are what im looking for and this ticks neither box. That being said my mate bought one and it runs flawlessly but that one is manufactured in a different country to mine. So its hit and miss

My worst rifle purchase would be my Sako L461AI (not as accurate as any of my Howas and cost 2-3 times as much! Nice rifle other than that but. One day I will crack it's secret I guess but disappointed in it so far.

No it's a rippa, never lets me down and I always hit what I aim at 99% of the time, she ain't pretty or expensive but she won't be getting moved on unlike the Sako if it doesn't start shaping up better, the amount of things I've missed using it really is a worry, things I don't miss when using the Howso's. The other thing that pisses me off about the little sako is the crap trigger! f***ing woeful compared to the Howso's now.

OK, let's just remember who started this :P
My Marlin 336 sucks.
It only shoots sub moa at 100m; the bolt can be removed after undoing one screw and I can low mount a nice 2-7x scope, much like a Winnie 94 :sarcasm:

I must admit that the Winchester does take the prize for the cool factor. The best after market accessory for a lever gun is a trigger job.

Many years ago I considered buying an 1892 Winchester octagonal barrel in 32-20 and the guy loaned it to me for a week to play with. Sadly, accuracy was non-existent and the 32-20 cartridge is entirely impotent (essentially a subsonic.22LR with twice as much bullet). On early mornings I could watch the bullet strolling down range, in all directions except where I was aiming. Glad I didn't buy that one without trying it first.

For this topic, "my worst", I have a Remington 510 that groups around ten-inches at 50 yards. My father-in-law got it in 1940 for his 14th birthday and spent decades "fishing" with it. Dip the muzzle in the creek, wait until fishy comes near, pull the trigger. I reckon the barrel is just one long collection of consecutive bulges. If it didn't have family history attached I wouldn't bother keeping it :-)

Others have mentioned the Bentley pump gun. My first shotgun was a brand new eight-shot Bentley pump. Put many thousands of shells through it protecting crops and never had any trouble with it. A minor regret was the short barrel (barrel and mag tube were equal lengths) but overall I couldn't fault it for reliability or capability.

Lady Noisy has an original '92 in .32-20 and it's as slick as soapy glass. No problems with feeding and its diet is 95% black powder. Cost her $450. Eats cast semi wad cutters and flat nose mixed up no problem. Shoots a 2" group at 50 yards. It's one of her favourites.

Sounds good to me, I might have to grab one for a plinker.. I wonder if I got a pre1900 would 32-20 be considered obsolete?

You can still buy 32-20 ammo I think.

Ruger 10/22 semi auto. Rotary magazine would never feed reliably and it was lucky to group better than 3" at 50 yards regardless of the ammo. Was happy to hand it in during the buy back.
The pen may be mightier than the sword, but personally I prefer the .30/30 Winchester.
