My first Mosin

Post by trumpychris » 21 Jul 2016, 4:11 pm

I just picked up a new to me Mosin Nagant M44. Its a 1945 Izhevsk that was refurbished in Ukraine. Its in excellent nick.

I haven't shot it yet but that doesn't stop me from writing my thoughts.

I really like short rifles, probably because I'm a shortass myself!

Cheers

It sure is. I'm a happy lad!

Id like to find a 91 or a 91/30 as well but that will have to wait because I've just bought an 1895 Spanish carbine in 7.62 that is also in excellent nick. I hope the wife doesn't find out.

The M44 is a blast, pun intended. Be sure you wear ear plugs and I hope you get a chance to touch a round off in the dark. Fireball is not an exaggeration.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

I have to wear hearing protection these days, I'm already part deaf in both ears and I have a hearing aid for my left.

I've seen a few videos of the fireball and when I have a free weekend I'll be taking it to the farm for a range test which will include a few shots at night.

I finally got around to taking the Mosin out for a shoot. Its a hell of a lot of fun but there are a few things I want to change and the most major one is the sights. Ive never been any good with a leaf sight so I think that a peep is in order.

I am lucky enough to have my own 100m range for testing and zeroing my rifles so I filmed a quick video and posted it to my blog.

http://trumpychris.blogspot.com.au/2016/07/video-at-range-with-mosin-nagant-m44.html

Hope you enjoy watching the video as much as I did making it.

Enjoyed your vid mate. You don't waste any time getting them off do you :) Looked at mojo sights too. Pity you could not get a receiver mounted peep that you could epoxy on but even that would mar the finish. Not surprised the butt is causing you medical problems  It has sharp edges  A Past Recoil Shield would be just the antidote

Hahahaha yeah its always fun getting them away quickly. I'm not very accurate with the rifle for now but I'll only get better with it the more I shoot it. I think I'll order a limbsaver from brownells now that they have an Australian site.

My shoulder is still tender today! I have other rifles with metal butt plates and they don't hurt anywhere near as much as this Mosin.

Even my .50 & .58 muzzleloaders don't hurt that much!

I found the same, took my type 53 which is a Chinese made M44 the other week to the range. Had a bruise for a few days after. The 91/30 is better. The squared edges are the problem

Cheap ass.......hehehhehe

Mate you should buy some 444 Marlin at almost $5 a round. That too will be getting reloaded.......and i am lucky I do not own the 444 Lever Action, but I will have to bring said owner and Marlin up there one day!.

Love your range!

I've wanted my very own place to play for many many years now. I'll let you know when I'm out there next and you're more than welcome to fly in. I'll even open the hangar door for you!

I own a Finnish M39 in 7.62x54R and that kicks like no bodies business! I have been thinking about getting one of these (M44/M38) for a while but will probably hold off because they are not chop over 300m.

Your place looks amazing though Chris! Would love my own shooting range!

I think mine should be good to about 500 yards if I can get a decent peep sight on the thing. I just wish I could get a side plate and put my Central No4 on it. Once I get the Mojo's it should be a lot better.

That range took me about 6 weekends and about 300 litres of diesel to build. You're right though, It is awesome having your own playground. I just wish it was legal for me to shoot cat H there. I might talk to the police and see if they'll have any issues with me running cat H safety courses there.

It would mean machining the action and that not something I'm willing to do.
