for starting out

Post by rosmol85 » 12 Nov 2013, 2:45 pm

Hi. I am in the process of getting my gun licence and am wondering the best type of gun for me to buy. I don't want to go to a shop and have the sales person telling me the best gun is the one that will get him the most commission. I am a beginner and will mostly use it for target shooting long range, but once i have developed my skill, i would like to be able to use the same gun to hunt. Just until i can afford to upgrade. Any other advice would also be appreciated. Thanks

That's a pretty open question mate. Lots of people just going to tell you their favourite brand

What are you hunting?

If you want to do target shooting and busting bunnies, a .223 would work for both.

If you want to do target shooting and hunt dear .308 or 300 win mag will work for both.

You can hunt with a proper long range target rifle, but it will usually be too long/heavy to carry around comfortably.

As a starting point I'd say look at some of the longer barrel Remington 700's.

You could get a hundred recommendations for that, need some more info.

How far is long range? 300m, 500m, 1000m?

What do you want to hunt?

What's your budget?

Have you got your hands on a rifle at all yet? Any brand likes or dislikes?

More info... Help us help you :P

Target rifles and Sporter rifles for hunting are pretty different.

I think you'll need to come down on one side of the fence or the other for this really. Going with a proper bench rifle from the start sounds like the way to go if you plan to buy a dedicated hunting rifle down the track anyway.

Something like a Remington 700 SPS Tactical might fit the bill to start.

Heavy target barrel, but short so shouldn't be too unwieldy/heavy for carrying around on the occasional hunt.

I'd recommend .223 or .308 as both have readily available, economically priced ammo and are inherently accurate calibres. If you wanna shoot long range and hunt a Remington Varmint SF is hard to go past. Just keep in mind you won't be competitive with the bench rest boys without a rifle dedicated to that discipline but one of those guns would be rubbish to hunt with.
