It might be old news that an Aussie girl, Catherine Skinner, won gold in the trap.. good on you Catherine!
Recently 'we' (when we win we all like to take credit ) won another gold in the modern pentathlon, actually Chloe Esposito did!! - which involves air pistol. I think this sport is the most interesting fascinating sport that they compete at...
Most people dont realise that historically it replicates a soldier finding himself or herself behind enemy line and having to fight, with a pistol, with a sword, run, swim and find a horse... for his (or her life)..... apparently, this is my understanding anyway, and as such it may potentially be the must practical of the events representing real life skills the competitor had to possess for their survival (during the war years anyway).
The only modern adjustment seems to be an air pistol as opposed to a 'real' pistol ('laser' pistol at the worlds )
fencing remains, as does the unfamiliar horse element, where the competitors have 20 minutes to familiarise themselves with the horse, just as if they 'found' the horse behind enemy lines....
So the modern pentathlon consists of
200m swim
Fencing
3.2km run combining pistol shooting
Show jumping
[original penta involved wrestling, running, long jump, javelin, discus]
So.... if you every have the chance to meet Chloe -
consider she is the 'best in the world' at combining the elements necessary for a soldiers survival..... so be nice
Onya Chloe!!
