Should have stored my rifle muzzle down

Post by brand » 14 Nov 2013, 7:45 am

My gear has been locked away for about 2 months lately, found out over the last few days after taking it out I should have store my rifle muzzle down.

My safe's lined with a synthetic carpet stuff, and I have (or had...) a soft aftermarket pad on the rifle.

I was storing the rifle butt down, and obviously something between the carpet and the butt pad didn't agree with each other.

After the 2 months there the pad has gone to goo and half melted to the carpet :(

Lesson learned, muzzle down in future.

Yes it's a good policy, bit of extra care needed, but muzzle down is the go.

Sit the muzzle in or on a block of wood if you can, then the oil won't worry anything.

It was probably a reaction with the oil you use

I use Inox, which I think is very good, but it doesn't like rubber. Any rubber band etc, used with it, including the stretchy elastic on a Scope cover
will desintergrate within a week. But the Inox stays in place well, and cleans off easily with Metho.

Can be the carpet itself too apparently, if it's treated with the wrong stuff.

I've read a few reports of people resting pads on the safe carpet and them not liking each other. Same result, melted pads.

Something in making the plasticy carpet I guess.

Had the standard soft pad on my CZ 452 silhouette replaced with a pachmayr pad and the original had started to fall apart and come off in sticky chunks - apparently as a result of the oil being used on the rifle adversely effecting the recoil pad. New one looks ok at the moment.....

How long was it before it started to break down from the oil roughly?

If you remember...

I purchased the rifle second hand and was told it was less than a year old and I replaced the pad about 3 months after I had it. The rifle must have been smothered in oil at some stage as I separated the barreled action and the synthetic stock and the inlet area was dripping with oil.

Someone was a bit paranoid about storing it I guess.

Slathered on the oil "just in case".

I think that was the case. Oh well, I have a "customised" CZ452 silhouette now

I guess I can say I had a custom recoil pad.

Sure it was goo, but it was the softest one around

That sucks :(

Oh well, at least a new recoil pad isn't too expensive... $90 or whatever.

Get yourself a new Limbsaver or Pachmayr.
