How much ammo

Post by Mongrel » 07 Oct 2016, 6:12 pm

I was just sorting out my new ammo carry box and got me thinking,

How much ammo do you guys carry?

A day at the range i will take 20-40 308 rounds or 100-200 22 rounds

A weekend away (only done once) 60 308 rounds and 2000 22 rounds

Or a week away, i cant comment

Be interesting to see what others take :)

I have found it's better to take more ammo than I need. I prefer to shoot till I've had enough. Also take more rifles than I need cause I'm not sure want I want to shoot on the day. Always take a .308 and .223, usually 50 rounds of .308, 100-150 .233, 500-1000 rounds of .22, 50 rounds 45-70, 50 rounds of whichever Milsurp I take. 30-06, 6.5 swede,.303 . Depending how I feel I sometimes bring the shotty and clay flipper as well. Running out of ammo s**ts me, always bring lots. Life is too short to be a tightass on range day.

Especially if you are at the range and there are ladies randomly walking past and you are like, hey you should totally handle my rifle... And they take turns at handling your rifle. Yeah, definitely don't want to run out of ammo then.

Rifle range - 100 -150 .303 and a brick of .22

Shotty range, as many damn shells as i can lock up, usually about 500 at least

Hunting at least 2 full mags of .303 with some stippers in the chest rig, or about 100rnds of .22, and if its with the shotty maybe about 20 shells usually half half of shot/slugs

Better to have and not use than need to use and not have :D

Between 50 and 100 for every shooting activity.... rabbits, roos, goats, practice days.

I'll pack much less if I'm on foot stalking or whistling. 10 to 20 rounds.

Ideally I try to keep enough, there's nothing worse than running out.

One must always be cocked, locked and ready to rock when ladies wander the range. You never know when a yummy mummy might want to handle your equipment ;)

I tend to agree with Brett, unless ammo starts breeding if left alone I tend to take most of what I have on hand. Gives me a chance to do reloading. Nothing worse than a quiet boring evening and all your brass is loaded. (Unless it's the night before range day ;) )

You guys must have money trees in the back yard.

Shooting fclass I take a box of 50 rounds. Lasts me two trips, then I load some more.

Culling I usually take 50 223 but only shoot a few at longer range, plus 100-200 22lr.

If I'm just practicing I let off 20 223 and usually a box or two of 22lr. Unless I'm developing loads, the 7-08 only gets out when I can shoot it past 300, so at club practice meets.

Will probably be shooting the 223 more at the range this year but will still only be 30-40 rounds per trip.

I may have been a bit pre-mature (yeah yeah that's what the wife says) as I probably have 500-600kg of loaded ammo. For pistols at the range I pack a minimum of 200 per pistol unless it's the 44 / 460 then only 100 for them. Because I tend to go bush for a week at a time it'll be a minimum of 250 per rifle caliber packed unless 12ga then I pack 500. Much depends on the purpose, duration of the trip and local availability of ammo at chosen destination. Always best to come home with loaded rounds then to be away wishing you had more :)

Wow you guys do have money to burn ! For a weekend away I'll take maybe 100 of 22,a box or 2 of 12g,and maybe 50 of whatever center fire I'm using. On the other hand,I always take 2 or 3 times as many arrows as I ever need :-) I figure if I kill one animal for every 3 shots, that's still way more than I want to clean lol. I don't do range days, but I will admit I had my first go at clay shooting a few months ago and I was amazed how quick we burnt through a slab of shells !

There's a pretty clear line from what I see here... 2 categories:

1. people who love target shooting and take their time with every shot.
2. heathens (me) - those who love target shooting BUT also love just shooting.

This is where the confusion is from, methinks. Some of us just enjoy shooting stuff. Not talking about clovers, just fun, offhand at targets at various distances, etc. Doesn't have to be tight, just have to hit it. Takes all sorts :)

Lol Brett pick the pistol shooter!

For me, 200+ rounds for anything semi auto.

150+ for my rimfire rifle and maybe 100 for my .223 as I am not hand loading them yet and it's a hunting rifle only. I just practice a lot on the rimfire rifle.

Depends on where I'm going hunting and what for, generally for me I just take a box of reloads for the day (100rds) - In the old days when I was going away for a week culling etc I'd take 4 or 5 x that sometimes more depending on what we were doing.

I always take more than I should need cos I don't want the inconvenience of running out, easier to take some home than stuff around trying to find ammo in some of the outback places where we frequented back then.

I've got about 500 22 rounds in the safe... When hunting rabbits I normally take about 50 rounds in 1 box. Eley sub HP, CCI Quiet Segmented (for mynas) and HV HP (in a second magazine in case I see a fox inside 100m).

Got a box of CCI velocitor the other day to test.

2000 rounds for a weekend?!
I mean this in the least critical way but what are you shooting? Flies?
Crikey, for a weekend of culling I'd never need more than 150-200 22-250 rounds, a box or two of shotty and a box of 50 22's...
I've found the more I go the less I realise I need to take.....
I only go to the range 2-3 times a year and I must admit I'm staggered at how much ammo some people go through......
By the sounds of this thread I need to buy shares in bloody CCI or hornady maybe

LOL, never owned a 22 before and there was a few pple shooting....in the end we used almost 1500 of them plinking homemade targets, pots and anything we thought would be hard to hit, while trecking around the property

Bounce few cans across the paddock and those self resetting/flipping .22 targets - easy 500 rounds through my lever action.

If I'm doing a morning fox patrol I just take six fox loads in the mag of the .204 and four Trailboss loads in my pocket just in case.
Haven't been to a rifle range since I was a kid, but intending to get out there Wednesday after next with a lot of luck. I plan to take a hundred in 7mm-08 and .204, and I might take a brick of LR if I decide to take a .22.
If I'm just going up the paddock for some practice I'll shoot maybe 150 to 200 rimfire (I like to have a lot of different types of .22LR on hand - I picked up some Velocitors last week to try out), or maybe twenty rounds in a centrefire or two. If I'm shooting load development, then generally not more than 50rds (depends on what phase I'm at), but I'll walk back and load some more if I can fit in another session. Outside of load development I don't do much real "practice" with the centrefires (that's what rimfires are for), but I'll take them out every week or two just to confirm zeros for peace of mind. Last week I managed to burn up some .22LR, .204, 8x57mm, 12-gauge and even put four balls through the muzzle loader.
If I'm going to be out for a few days, a dozen heavy loads and 30-50 varmint loads for whichever centrefire I'm taking (I live in hope of stumbling upon a nice busy rabbit warren like we had in the old days).
When I was shooting IPSC pistol we generally shot a 100-round competition, over several courses of fire, but I would take a few hundred in case anybody else needed some. If I was up there on my own during the week I'd take 500rds.
