7mm Mauser 98 Obendorf

Been shooting my mates 7mm magnum and I'd like to get a 7mm as well.

Was thinking about getting a Mauser in 7mm on oz gun sales for 650 in full camo! What's everyone's thoughts on them?

Typo? ad says 7X75, I'm assuming it should read 7X57 and it's far from a 7mm magnum, in an old action performance would be below 7-08 levels. It is a capable hunting round but i wouldn't expect it to be spectacularly accurate if it's fitted with the original barrel. you'd be wiser to buy a modern secondhand gun IMHO

Have you looked at 7mm-08?
7x57mm is a decent cartridge but it's a fair way short of 7mm RemMag.
7mm-08 is about midway between the two.

What do you want from the rifle?
Are you going to load your own ammo?
If not, is 7x57mm factory ammo readily available?

Personally, I love military rifles, but not when they've been sporterised.

The 7x57 also took many hundreds of elephant. Mind you, the rifles were in the hands of people like Pondoro Taylor and Karamojo Bell, and a lot of later men died trying to emulate them. Still, the 7x57 is an excellent round for medium game, and the most popular deer cartridge in Europe. It displays quite a flat trajectory, giving good accuracy at all ranges and has been used successfully in 1000 yard shoots. I really like shooting my 7mm rifles, and can highly recommend them.

Hey thanks guys, yeah I'm well aware that it has less punch than the magnum. Yeah I first looked at a 7mm-08 just wanted something a little more unique. Haha. You can buy 7mm Mauser ammi from Winchester still.

Its cool to have something unusual.I messed around with subsonic chambers years ago. Before I heard of the 300 whisper I put 80 gr pills in a hornet and loaded up with pistol powder to 4g.It was subsonic and quiet but a ball bearing out of a ging would work better.I considered necking up the hornet case to 6mm.I remember it would make a straight case with the 243 deprimer in the hornet dies even as thin as hornet cases are it worked well just never got a barrel chambered.anyone done this yet

What do you mean by a subsonic chamber?
I develop subsonic loads in every caliber I've ever owned, even the 4400fps .204 Ruger.

I just remembered I did make a handful of rounds with 80gr .243 projectiles in hornet cases if I could get 950-1000 FPS it would be like a mini 300 whisper. The long heavy bullets in the hornet did not stabilise and went through sideways.I was using a single shot Harrington and Richards and they bore the same barrel for 30/06 so I was not worried about hurting the rifle or myself.I might look into this again

O.K. I am not aware this is possible I always thought you needed a heavier bullet than normal to go slower

Often it's the reverse, longer bullets need rpm to stabilise so they usually hit a minimum velocity and start tumbling.
I shot some .303 rounds at 500fps and they didn't hit within two-feet of my 100m target.

I shot 8x57mm down to 720fps with 180gn bullets.

I liked the subsonic winchester rounds in .22LR but the z ammo was almost pointless

That was my experience with the Z-Long, they don't shoot remotely well in any of my .22's.

The 7 x 57 mauser has been around since 1892 and I wouldn't call it "unique". I would be pretty confident in saying that there would be more rifles chambered for it than any other 7mm.
It can be loaded to exceed performance of the 7-08, and is capable of very good accuracy in the right rifle.
Just about every major ammunition manufacturer has commercial ammo for it. Some factory loadings are on the lighter side due to the fact that there are so many "antique" firearms chambered for it. ( 92 & 93 Mauser, Remington Rolling block, Lee 1897)
The M-98 Mauser is an inherently strong action and if in good condition would be capable of standing up to higher pressure handloads.
I have rifles chambered in both the 7 x 57 and 7-08 so speaking from experience not hearsay.
Actually just put the 7 x 57 barrel back in a Sako L61R yesterday and put 5 shot groups under an inch @ 100m with all loads tested. :drinks:

Great work . I think that a lot of people like to work with different types of gear. I picked up new lee dies for.243 yesterday so I can make the 6mm fit hornet again.I will get a barrel made and see how it goes
