303-22 Falcon (Update 2)

Post by Heckler303 » 27 Oct 2016, 8:00 pm

So I finally got a 303-22, after months of deciding. Built on a No.5 Mk.1 action of all things  (yes yes, I'll get around to pictures soon.). Just a few minor problems:

The stock. It's the original jungle-carbine stock, and it just looked so bad on it that I decided to remove it and flog it off.

The metalwork. Anyone who's picked up a No.4 made 1936-1950 knows exactly what the problem is going to be. They wern't blued, they were painted. And it looked absolutely rubbish. That and the machining marks! Never have I encountered ones that were this bad. You can literally see where the press has whacked into it to shape the receiver, so that's getting a lot of treatment with some sandpaper and a dremel.

The scope base: Welded on by someone in their backyard. Thanks bubba. :violin:

And a very sticky, very gooey bolt

I'll see what I can do with it then take some photos. Picked just for it is a custom ATI Lee Enfield No.4 stock, it's a lot higher quality than what I was expecting, I'll say that. Also tucked away is reloading equipment gotten way beforehand, so I'm all set up to start making some wildcats.

Will get right on it.

These millenials..... if only they had a camera in a device which was attached to their hands, it would be so much easier to get pictures!

Really sorry about the wait guys, internet speed's slower than Gina Rineheart attempting to make a getaway in a Toyota Prius. Here's a little teaser when it first arrived.

Image

Unfortunately, I've not visited the safe in a while, but it has had a little bit of work done to it since, mainly a lot of metal polishing with various grades of sandpaper and re-bluing. I did however, manage to get up to the re-bluing stage. Acetoning the body once all the black paint was stripped back, polishing up the surfaces with a lovely fluffy bench grinder, applying Birchwood Casey Super Blue, leaving it for an a hour to rust, dunking it in a container of Luke warm water, then proceeding to rub it back gently to steel wool.

Unfortunately, WD-40, which was used to prevent further rusting with the bluing, instead decided to create lots of ugly patches, which ruined what was such a nice rust-blue. :( Guess I've got to strip it back and start again.

The ATI stock however, has worked out really well, took less than 15 minutes to file and fit, then an extra 20 to bed with shimming, plus floating the barrel out. Once I've got the full rifle on the table, I'll even give a mini-review on it.

:wtf: Just gonna ignore this one.

Yep, first load is going to be 30 grains of AR2208 pushing out a 45 grain .224 projectile. Guessing to see power output just over that of a 22-250. It's possible to hit 220 swift performance, but I'm not willing to try that juuuuust yet  .

Before any pics are going to be shown, just wanting to say to Oddbloke something:

Sod off. :geek:

Now we can get started.

This is a bullet. I'm sure you already knew that, but this is a 40 grain federal projectile taken out of a 22LR and with the help of Trail Boss (tm), 4 grains of powder behind it. Scored a 0.80 in group with them at 40 yards, knocking somewhere between 1200 and 1300, so this is looking like it could make for some very cheap loadings. Of course there's the other end of the spectrum, launching them near 4000fps with 45 grain hollowpoints, but that can wait for another time.

Now for some Enfield Pr0n:

I don't happen to have any little sisters, and as a computer graphic design student, I took that comment personally. :sarcasm:

Polymer stocks for enfields will occasionally pop up here and there on a few of the different sites, but this one in particular was supplied by Western Firearms for the sum of 130 dollars. In a desert tan scheme, as the black just didn't suit the lee enfield's style that much.
