Thoughs on a howa 1500 walnut .223

Post by Borgie97 » 01 Nov 2016, 1:56 pm

Hi, im new to the group, ive applied for my gun licence and now im seeking what to get for my first rifle.

Im really keen on the howa 1500 walnut in .223 and looove the look of the wooden stock. i will be shooting rabbits, cats, foxes and wild dogs.

I know some might think getting a 22 for your first gun is better, true but... ive been shooting guns for years anywhere from .22 .222 .223 .243 .25-06 .270 . 30-06 .308. 12g .410 And ive gotten confident in shooting most calibers and im not recoil sensative.

So what are your thoughts? Ive got a redfield revolution 4-12x40 to slap on it, remington scope mounts, bipod, sling ,even got 22 cal bore snake and cleaning kit and a 3-5 gun safe

Cheers fellas

Borgie, I'm in a similar situation looking at a centrefire. I was originally going to get a Weatherby but they have jumped in price over the past few months so will probably get a Howa 1500 SS and add a boyds pepper stock later. All reports indicate that they are great guns for the price.

Re the calibre. I was looking at a 223 but have settled on a 243 as I shoot deer as well. The 243 shoots a 55gr bullet flatter with more oomph plus it will shoot up around 100gr bullets. The advantage of the 223 is it is quieter, cheaper and has less recoil. Let us know what your get.:-)

I've got a Howa 1500 Mini Action in .223 and it never fails to impress me with just how well it shoots. I load 26gr of AR2208 pushing a 55gr Hornady ZMAX for sub moa accuracy. Great little rifle so go for it :)

I did not rate the Howa till picked on up from a guy at work in .243 nice to shoot and impressed with the feel of it if your going bush with it consider the Houge stock I know its not wood I wont normally buy anything but wood and taking them bush I get a bit jumpy for a scrub gun go polymer.
If i had space in my safe i would be looking for a few more Howa,s

I have a HOWA 1500 and I love it. I really like the look of the light weight stocks they have for it. I feel you go to their website search for "howa" in the top right and scroll down to the
MDT LSS
CHASSIS SYSTEM
FDE FINISH
It looks superb.

I got the fluted barrel, a little heavier but I don't mind.

A great load I'm using is 2206H at 22 grains or 25 grains. I got for 22 grains with the plain old super roo load and can easily hit a clay with a red dot X1 sight at 110 odd meters. Howa make a darn fine rifle.

Best thing you can do for a Howa bar none! turns an ordinary trigger into a fantastic one. My mate used mine the other week as was blown away how nice the trigger was to use. :D

I've got an older Wetherby (same as Howa) shots extremely well. Add in a trigger job and value for money Howa is still hard to go past.

Cat H here so not much help but applying on line is said to get faster attention plus of course make sure that you do everything required spot on. Then police time should be fairly quick, like around two weeks depending.

28 days waiting time then depending on how busy they are, best to ring them if you want a good idea as to how long it will roughly take. P.S. My mate waited mths and mths and mths for his but that was some time ago so hopefully things have improved in that department but just give em a call and see what's doing.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of firearms ownership, where nothing gets done quickly

Seems around 6-8 weeks on average from application date till you have it in your possession, if you haven't already done so put your pta/pta's in now so you don't have to wait any longer to purchase your firearm after you get your licence.

No, no need for a deposit or anything like that.

All you have to do is go to the online PTA application page, first you'll need to state your personal details and application reference number. You'll need to select the dealer you wish to purchase from, select rimfire/centre fire etc, caliber, action, mag capacity etc, reason you need particular firearm, pay your money, which is $36 give or take and you're away....

How much will it cost you to transfer it back into your name?

Cost of the PTA and dealers brokerage fee, so around $80 I would reckon. Id probably do the same as the OP in his case as the wait on a licence through QLD weapons licencing can be brutal.

I wouldn't pay personally, I'm a patient man these days thank god (wasn't when I was younger of course) but as you get older you learn to be more tolerant and patient, especially when it comes to anything to do with a Gov't Dept. :silent:

Just checked my PTA app on line and it's been issued so all good, probably see it sometime next week I guess. :drinks:
