Mosin Nagant

Post by bladeracer » 14 Nov 2016, 9:05 pm

Spotted this in a shop on Friday arvo. Wasn't able to get in on Saturday but I went in early this morning and grabbed it.
PTA took five minutes - fastest so far!
M1891 1932 manufacture.
With bayonet, sling and a scope mount, but hasn't been drilled for it yet.

But I can't find brass anywhere :-(
Not even any ammo around here.

Anybody know of a source likely to have 7.62x54R or 7.62x53R brass?

Looks good, looking forward to picking mine up shortly. I am sure I have seen some PPU/Highland ammo around. I was just going grab a few boxes of factory ammo and reload that. I will check some of my local haunts and let you know.

I tend to agree about scoping these things :-)
Thanks for the tip.

Agree JS, I'd play with it the way it is.. Lovely BTW...

At least scope it with period correct gear if you must go that way.. ;) I think the bolt may have been different to accommodate them though ? can't remember for sure, I'd have to ask an ol mate of mine that has a serious addiction for such things.. :)

RPG Firearms are the only place I've found so far that actually claims to have 7.62x54R brass, but both email addresses bounce!

I think I found some S&B brass this morning. At least, they took my money so I hope they actually have it in stock.
And my dealer just rang to say they just found the 100 S&B cases they knew they had but hadn't been able to find(!), so it's possible I might even have 200 pieces (for $250). He even tried to get one of his regulars to part with ten cases to keep me going until I can get some to replace his - no chance there :-)

I sent out a lot of emails and FB messages and all the replies I've had so far have been the same, no stock around for a while. Even shops with several rifles for sale have no brass for them. One dealer suggested it relates to the US embargo against Russia but that seems a stretch. The S&B importer has 1000 pieces in a container arriving December 19th. 500 are already sold and the rest are unlikely to be available before mid-January at best.

Centreway was one of the sites I looked at but they didn't list any brass at all so I skipped them, and ammo is no good to me unless it's local unfortunately - Keilor is a 4hr round trip with tolls. I looked at more than fifty gunshops online and found a total of three 100-piece packs of Lapua. Two were the usual expensive $220-ish, the third guy wants $345 for his box - no thanks. Why would people be paying for Lapua brass for an M91/30? Are these rifles really that accurate?
I even enquired with a surplus store that sells dummy ammo if their cases are undamaged as I could've used those, but they didn't have any either :-)
I was reaching the point of grabbing some 45-70 brass to turn into 7.62x54R, but hopefully I've dodged that chore.

Thanks for the information though SupaDuke :-)

If you guys, in VIC are buying .3105 FMJ projectiles, I'd be happy to chip in and buy on bulk.

How many would we need to get bulk discount, and what would they cost?
Are these the military round-nose or a spitzer-style FMJ?

I got several hundred .311" SP bullets with my No4 Rifle so I was just going to use those, as well as the Hornady XTP's, and cast lead bullets of course.
I'm also currently trying to get some bullets made via CNC for the Carcano, which should hopefully become a handy source for any oddball sizes I might need.

I've found a lot of websites are not updated very regularly. Also a lot of shops are fairly busy and ****** at answering phones. John at centreway is hopeless at answering the phone. Too bad it's so far away, they are good for stocking surplus ammo.

And JS I might be interested in sharing if you can find some. I dare say it would be special order, never seen it. Let me know what you can find out.

I have to wait another week or so for mine. I paid for the 91/30 and then then in a moment of weakness I got a M39 Finn as well. Will save $85 on freight shipping them together. It's an arsenal refurb and in like new condition. Have heard many good things about m39's and, to me, they are a spectacular looking rifle. The stocks are starting to dwindle so
I decided to grab one before they get stupid in price.

I'm pissweak when it comes to buying guns lol.

Having been in business most of my adult life I hate using the phone when email is an option. Email takes seconds and can be responded to when you have a chance. Phone calls waste time and interrupt work.

I'll keep them in mind and will drop past if I ever get up to Melbourne.

I really just like milsurps for the flavour that comes with shooting them, I don't need or expect great accuracy from them, and I have no interest in collecting them in any serious way. I definitely don't want pristine, "never-fired" examples either :-)

So, after not being able to find any brass anywhere, other than way-too-expensive Lapua and some outrageously-priced Norma...I now have 200 pieces of S&B :-)

Happy to sell some at the market rate, just to help out a fellow shooter ;-)

I'm assuming that the picture of the brass is not indicative of what you are actually getting. Cause that ain't 7.62x54r

$349 for 100 cases......yeah......nah.
$3.49 for each brass, when I can get loaded rounds for $1.25
Each to their own, but I doubt you will get the benefit of fancy brass in an old milsurp.
By golly that's expensive brass

Trying to take advantage of a supply glut I think.
That's about double Norma's RRP?
I got 200 pieces of S&B for $230 delivered - pretty happy with that :-)

Centreway finally got back to me.

"PPU ammo is $28 per pack of 20. Buy 5 packs or more and price comes down to $25 per pack.
Sellier and Bellot brass cases are $15 per 20 or $65 per 100."

Bugger, half what I paid :-)

G'day bladeracer,
Keep all your S&B cases, you're going to need them. The brass they use does not reload very often, I've had some only take 3 loads. Your most cost effective option is PPU ammo, then reload the brass, Cheers.
