That Martini looks to be in pretty good nick. Does it shoot any good?

And JS, where the hell did you find that picture. I'm scared as to what was entered in the search bar.

Hairy pony tailed man, thigh high boots and harness.

The results could be terrifying.

Yes, it's in good shape overall and the bore is excellent for its age, darkish but no pitting and good strong rifling.

I'm still coming to grips with shooting it. The trigger comes in at about 10lbs + and the barley corn front sight is difficult to see with my old eyes so there are some challenges. I'm currently using factory ammo and will need to work up a load for it. POI is about 10 inches high at 100 using 150 grain Federal. Shot 150 out of a possible 200 last weekend with about a 10 inch spread at 100.

An updated photo of the new lady with natural light and after a very very gentle wipe down with a damp warm cloth.
It was bothering me how refinished the stock was looking, almost varnished, but the thing was that it was sticky to touch because of all the wipe downs she had over the years and a little oil had accumulated, the previous owner was a collector and had it for over 10 years and never fired a shot! He had bought it himself from another collector.

What would a good maintenance routine involve that would keep her in good shape without affecting its condition? Light grease on the metal bits but what about the wood?

Cheers mate.
Any brand you reckon is good or is there just any number of quality products out there used by antique dealers etc?

Search Forum for DIY wax. I tried that and it works very well, but only because I had most of the ingredients.

Alternatively Birchwood Casey Gun Stock Wax. On you Mauser, I recon Birchwood would work really well. I use it on K11 and K31 wood. But on diy on Enfield, seems to do better.

This is what I'm talking about.

If you go with this option. Do not peel the foil off under the lid. Make a small hole instead to keep air out. This way it won't dry up. Good shake and it'll last for a while. Also, alot cheaper than DIY.

So after quite a few years of searching, the planets aligned and I found a K31 and I had money spare. Big shout out to Juststarting for the heads up on this one. Managed to snaffle this rifle just before it was put online for sale.

And before anyone asks: yes, the name tag was present under the buttplate. Very pleased about that.

Seems I got Walter from Zurich's rifle. I will be researching this further. I will look after it Walter , I promise.

Serial number puts it at a 1955 build.
Stock is in good condition. Metalwork, bolt and bore in excellent condition.

P.s.
John from Centreway has got a batch of these in. Great condition, I think he has 2 or 3 left. If you want one be quick. They don't stay on the market for long.

Nice looking K31 Supaduke, should be many hours of good fun in that. Nice to find a tag, but does the former owners Regiment details read any better in real life? The faded print does not show well in the photo. Now for a couple of the ferociously expensive ammo clips, Cheers.

Looks good.

Have a search around, you should be able to get some cheap PPU ammo which I’ve found shoots well in mine. I bought clips from this mob https://www.firearmsales.com.au/swiss-products.php. Plenty on eBay too.

I will check it again tonight mate and see if I can get more info from it for you.

I will probably get one clip just to have the set. And a bayonet. And a Swiss helmet. And....

I think (not 100%) K31 bayonets have serial numbers that match the rifle. So if you were to get one, chances are it wouldn't be matching and OCD would kick in pretty bad...

I have heard the original ones are a tad delicate, original design was single use only. I believe you can buy plastic reproduction ones that are far more durable.

On the subject of clips, the original cardboard clip is quite tough and durable if not overly abused. I have been using mine almost every month for 8 years and have not ruined one yet, apart from one I stood on.

Supaduke,
Whilst the 1918 bayonet is the usual model for the K31, it was also issued to specialist troops with the 1914 Pioneer Sawback, a very impressive bit of kit!

Nice pretty impressive really. I am not a history buff but to have a straight pull at that period seems pretty impressive where they the first?

Not sure who was the first. The original Schmidt Rubin was 1889. There were a few others I’ve seen mention of around 1895.

Winchester manufactured the "Lee Model" in 1895. A straight pull, 5 shot, magazine fed rifle in .236 U.S.N. ( Sometimes called the 6mm Lee Navy )
Serial number 1 rifle was sold in 1896. The original factory loading was a 112gr spitzer @ 2550 f/s. It is actually the parent case that Winchester based the .220 Swift on.
The original cartridge suffered due to the inconsistencies of the smokeless powders of the day. The same reason that blackpowder cartridges were chambered in more of the early 1894 Winchesters instead of the .30-30 which was the first "sporting" cartridge designed to use smokeless.

The first military straight pull was Ritter von Mannlichers 1886, Schmidts action was a year later but of a quite different design. Mannlicher used a cam and wedge design where Schmidt used a rotating cam sleeve. Both were developed into reliable actions that proved superior to Lee's or Ross's, Cheers.
