Push a patch into the bore just ahead of the throat.
Then I cut a piece of plastic strip about 10mm wide and 50mm long. Roll it up and drop it into the bolt lug recess where it springs out to prevent filling the recess with any casting alloy. Then heat up some chamber casting alloy from Northern Smelters - I use an empty fish can and a propane torch. It melts at some ridiculous temperature like 70C, then pour it into the chamber. Give it a minute to set, then tap it out with a rod from the muzzle - dead easy and takes all of five minutes to do.

Managed to score 115 in a 4 position shoot.

I have a new blank front sight coming, as I want to zero it for the ammo I use (handloads). It was zeroed by the Swedish armoury for the little 80gn FMJ Norma cased training rounds which are near impossible to find now.

Alright fellas, so it has happened - I now own a 303. Now, don't get me wrong, I still think that the No4 is an ugly broom stick. No5 did pick my interest for a while, however I refuse to pay crazy prices people are asking for them. So a bit of hunting around and what not, $915 (door-to-door) later I am sitting here happier than a pig in s**t with a reasonably sore shoulder (which is actually rare) and a pretty sweet deal, I think.

The 'ol surplus tin got a little lighter today...

Image

70 rounds later, this girl is still going strong.

Image

Few shots at paper and then a friend and I started walking them in to the 500m gong and a bunch of clay targets (I don't think enough people just have fun shooting) that we dropped along the range, at Little Liver. I took a risk on the rifle, the photos could have been better, but I wanted to move on it fast. Wasn't disappointed. Also, huge thanks, Supaduke for looking at the photos for me, was big help.

Good work, nice rifle.

Always makes me cringe a bit when I see a no.5, reminds me of back in the 90's when I was offered one new in grease paper. As well as a mint Winchester lever action in 44-40 (not sure what model it had a crescent stock). I foolishly dismissed both as "old man guns". I thought my 10/22 and polymer stocked remmy 870 were all I needed. I remember my Dad shaking his head at me. As they say, youth is wasted on the young.

Does anyone know a good website or a gun shop in the Melbourne area selling .303 stripper clips for a decent price?

About 2:1 at this stage. Maybe 120'ish + 200ish ...54R. I have an unopened tin of 54R ammo, which is nice. If only I could find the same for 303 and 7.5x55 I'd be pretty happy with that.

G'day duncan61,
Yes, exactly as I posted, Gewehr 281(e) was the Waffen description for the No1MkIII issued to German Reserves troops, Cheers.
Sorry, forgot the ammo question. They were not rechambered but issued with 303, 14 million rounds were captured in France alone

Well, hello there my Asian'ish friend...

Alright, so this is not a gun, but strictly speaking it does qualify for this thread. I just couldn't pass this by... Off it goes into my tin of surplus :) Actually, I need a new tin. This one is out of space. But anyhow, here they are. Kinda weird though. 32 per box, but magazines are 10 rounds. Weird f**ckers.

Oh juststarting,
Welcome to the world of "click..........................................BANG", "click...........click...........click..............................................BANG" We generally avoid the Pakistani ammo due to it's common fault of iffy primers and delayed firing, occasionally not firing at all. Sometimes you'll get a good box but the next one will drive you mad. As for the packaging, that is due to the English School of Musketry and their Course of Fire, 2 rounds sighting, 10 rounds Application, 10 rounds Moving Target (or Snap), 10 rounds Rapid. Each soldier would collect his ammo and proceed to the range. You can find Footscray/Maribyrnong ammo in the same packaging, as well as Radway Green.Nice No5 by the way, you may need to come over to the MRC and get one of our No5 T-Shirts and join the "Wandering Zero's".

I picked this up a few weeks ago at the Altona gun show.

P14 .303
All matching
Circa 1916, need more research. Finish is about 90% intact. Wood is dark but no cracks. Needs a full strip and tidy up. Rifling is strong and the bore is bright. All up in pretty good nick for a 100 year old rifle. Has the volley sights which is fairly rare. Brass unit disk is present. Has a rack plate added at the bottom from when it served with the French in Africa. A long and interesting history to be uncovered.
