And in some good news, I finally picked up my Finn and Russian. Haven't had time to get a proper look at them yet. Initial inspection seems to be excellent. I will get them cleaned up and take a few photos. The M39 really is quite a beautiful rifle. Got some nice character in the stock and the metal work and rifling is mint.

G'day Supaduke,
To reduce criminal misuse of the gun, it was fitted with a firing pin in the form of a trident with all 2 outside tines the same length and the center firing pin slightly shorter or sometimes the same length. Upon contact with the flat base of a conventional shell base the firing pin would be prevented from striking the primer. The diameter and depth of the groove allowed the striker to hit the primer. It was a good idea, but so easy to overcome. Will you be increasing your Vodka intake, by the way? You should get a lot of joy from your Ukko Pekka!

Thought I'd post something different. I could post a pic of couple of Mosins... But everyone knows what they look like. I am pretty happy i managed to track down actual Mosin clips with factory stamps, because I am OCD like that.

Nice one. I bought some Chinese ones that are ******. From the few I've tried, they don't work. Thankfully they only cost me about $6 for 10. Very tight in the clip slot and refuse to feed rounds.

Smith and Wesson Model 1917 in 45ACP. This particular revolver was part of a 1937 contract for Brazil, where they were known as Modelo 1937 and served with them until the early '70's, including with the Brazilian Expeditionary Forces in Italy during WW2.

You mates have good taste in milsurp handguns. Here we are flooded with top break garbage and of course endless piles of Nagants covered in cos. How did you end up with all our guns? :D

Although I do have to admit when we were kids we grabbed a couple of those top breaks and a couple boxes of ammo and had a bit of fun down by the creek! :)

G'day Wylie27,
Nice to get an old Range Rifle, did you get the sight with it? Your sight plate doesn't really look like a Central from the pics you showed, can you do a good one of just the sight plate? If you need a sight I believe some of the folk here may have one, or if it really is a Central plate you could buy a new T-Mac, Cheers.

Gun-Nut i know, i was holding it this morning looking for serial numbers and was thinking where have you been and what have you done? You are in beautiful nick.

No1Mk3, i didnt get the sights with it. I have attached a pic of the sight plate and its stamped central no 4. It has screwed into it part of the safety lever, i presume so it wasnt lost i guess! Looks like i just need some spacers and i can put that back on.

Looking for serial numbers and the found something interesting, the receiver, barrel, bolt, and nose cap all match. There is something etched in the wood just behind the nose cap but it is to warn to see. The magazine does no have a serial number at all.

I have taken pics of all the markings i could find and I am going to spend the day researching it!

G'day Wylie27,
Now I see what confused me. One way not to lose your dumb-bell spring! So a Central or a T-Mac on the shopping list. As for numbers, it is not unusual for replacement bolts to be numbered to the rifle, to check for original bolts on Australian produced rifles, check the 4 digit number underneath the bolt handle matches the one on the right hand rear of the action bolt way. This is a production number added during manufacture and will tell if it is the original bolt or not, Cheers.

I haven't worked how to post pics yet. But I have done some reloads for the Father in laws 1944 SMLE. It also has a central no 4 bracket on it. But no sight. Don't think it will turn up as the Father in law cannot remember clearly seeing in the last 30 years. I'd be interested in getting a new sight or putting smithless scope mount on as the Father in law cannot use the open sights with bad eyes/glasses etc. I try to work out how to post pics.

A very nice example there Cooper.

Was the wood shaved under the plate?

Do you get to shoot it much?

Yeah the wood is shaved under the plate. Don't know why. All the numbers seem to match bolt/receiver/ rifle end. But the stock butt says 1945 whereas the rifle stamp says 1944.
I have done some reloads for it.
Hornady 150gr soft points
38grains of AR2208 (just started in the middle)
Sellior and Bellot cases.

I've only fired it about twenty times so but can hit a 10inch metal gong at 100 metres most of the time. The front sight was a bit loose and had to moved across. I wouldn't mind putting a smith less scope mount on and seeing how it can actually group with a scope. I am not the best with open sights. Need a bit more practice!

I am sure there was a reason for the shaving of the wood, maybe it was a fitment. Mine is shimmed which i am glad he did.

i am off to the farm this weekend and will be shooting it for the first time.. Picked up some PPU factory ammo for it.

Maybe it was a Happy New Year rifle :)

I understand things were a little busy at that time and rifles were in high demand. Anything could have happened to get that out the door.

G'day Cooper,
Wood was removed from that area in order to fit the sight mounting plate square and parallel to the rifles axis. It needed to be done for most diopter sights such as the Lane, Parker Hale etc. A Central sight can often be found by asking around at VRA ranges, or buy a brand new T-Mac from Jeff Pannan at the next gunshow. (T-Mac are the inheritors of the Central sight and all parts are interchangeable) You will be looking at $180 to $250 for a Central or $225 for a T-Mac. (That might have changed)Cheers.
PS: I bought a no drill scope mount from Addley Precision of Canada and find them to be very good.

Nah, me and the old man collect bubba'd Lee Enfields and M17/P14s and make them happy little sporters.

However, I am guilty of bubba gunning one item...
