sungazer wrote:Have you found the MDF board the best as back boards for targets or just plain target boards. If painted are the weather proof. I was also considering ply, but think the exit would be really messed up and the form ply perhaps a bit expensive, chipboard I dont know either. I have been using an old door that I tied to a tree and kept patching with putty and repainting but the cows got to it and trashed it. Its good for new load development then I can move on to the gongs, then the range.

I just tape my targets to the MDF with insulation tape, but I can also simply stick adhesive dots to it if I want to. Generally though I prefer to tape four or six A4 pages up so any bullets that miss the target don't disappear among the plethora of pre-existing bullet holes in the board.

I put a fresh 600x1200mm sheet of 3mm MDF up on my new rubber bullet trap two weeks ago. It's had so far, 1630rds of .22LR, 65rds of .44 Magnum, 15rds of 8x57mm, 10rds of .303, 12rds of 7.62x54R and ten 12-gauge slugs, and has tons of life left in it yet. After a few hundred rounds at targets, most of your bullets are simply passing through the existing holes rather than making any new ones. I buy the sheets ten at a time as it's always useful to have on hand anyway, and it's about $3.50 a sheet from Bunnings.

I have shot at a variety of other boards as lots of junk gets brought out from town to the farm, like furniture, white goods, computers and such. Ply works okay but the grained surface doesn't take tape very well, and it tends to throw splinters when shot. Chipboard blows apart pretty badly, as does solid timber, which also makes big splinters. Sheet metal is quite good but will throw pieces of metal around. Formica and plastic sheets blow off pieces of plastic which then need cleaning up. Cardboard works in a pinch but doesn't stand up to wind or rain very well at all unsupported.

I shoot on my own property and don't want to leave a mess, and the MDF debris pretty much just turns to mush after a while, similar to layers of paper. As I also recover my bullets I don't want bits of metal debris laying about, which also messes up the metal detector. But even worse are splinters of wood, very annoying when sifting through dirt looking for bullets, particularly in our clay once it's wet.

As for weather-proofing it, I've never even considered it. It would probably cost more than the board costs anyway. I have some unpainted MDF that has been out in the Gippsland weather for exactly three years now. While the boards have certainly swelled significantly, they still protect the contents from the weather just fine. I think I'll have shot a board away long before the weather wore it down.

G'day bladeracer,
Nice pics, your rear sight blade, does it have the 2000m markings? If so, it is a replacement done during 8mm conversion, the ammo for these rifles was 154g cupro-nickel over steel cored lead, and after 1949 they changed to 154g gilding metal steel core. These rifles were designated M1903/35 in Turkish service, the /38 was an American importers idea, they also made a Carbine version with a barrel very much the same length as yours. Would you mind if I send your serial number to a collector in the US? It may set the cat among the pigeons, as it falls inside the range, almost in the middle, for 1939 conversions of M1903. Might get a few heads scratching in the Turk Collector circle! Have added a pic of the M1903/35 Carbine, dated 1939. Thanks to Joe S. for the pic.

Yep, 2000m sight ramp. I discovered that identifying the Turks is a very complicated trick but as near as I can get is a 1903/38. I did see a shorter barrel length, but this definitely looks to have been cut off on a lathe. Whatever details you need to identify it just ask and I'll look. Let anybody know that might be interested, I have no need to conceal my serial numbers.

A few pics of my first milsurp discussed in another thread.
It is a very nice and original 8mm Mauser kar.98AZ (or to some kar.98a) made in Danzig 1912.
All matching numbers and original as far as I can tell that came from a very good home.

I know it's only early days but I am in love, I have wanted a German milsurp my whole life, even the missus is on board as she asked if we could keep it in the bedroom tonight :wtf: and she is not a shooter, had to remind her of the storage requirement laws.

Nice. I'd start with a Mauser, Mosin and an Enfield. Nice classics, that set the tone. Of course there are lots of variants, models and makes of each, so that's a bonus, get to do a bit of reading and research :)

That Martini looks to be in pretty good nick. Does it shoot any good?

And JS, where the hell did you find that picture. I'm scared as to what was entered in the search bar.

Hairy pony tailed man, thigh high boots and harness.

The results could be terrifying.

Yes, it's in good shape overall and the bore is excellent for its age, darkish but no pitting and good strong rifling.

I'm still coming to grips with shooting it. The trigger comes in at about 10lbs + and the barley corn front sight is difficult to see with my old eyes so there are some challenges. I'm currently using factory ammo and will need to work up a load for it. POI is about 10 inches high at 100 using 150 grain Federal. Shot 150 out of a possible 200 last weekend with about a 10 inch spread at 100.

An updated photo of the new lady with natural light and after a very very gentle wipe down with a damp warm cloth.
It was bothering me how refinished the stock was looking, almost varnished, but the thing was that it was sticky to touch because of all the wipe downs she had over the years and a little oil had accumulated, the previous owner was a collector and had it for over 10 years and never fired a shot! He had bought it himself from another collector.

What would a good maintenance routine involve that would keep her in good shape without affecting its condition? Light grease on the metal bits but what about the wood?

Any brand you reckon is good or is there just any number of quality products out there used by antique dealers etc?

Search Forum for DIY wax. I tried that and it works very well, but only because I had most of the ingredients.

Alternatively Birchwood Casey Gun Stock Wax. On you Mauser, I recon Birchwood would work really well. I use it on K11 and K31 wood. But on diy on Enfield, seems to do better.

This is what I'm talking about.

If you go with this option. Do not peel the foil off under the lid. Make a small hole instead to keep air out. This way it won't dry up. Good shake and it'll last for a while. Also, alot cheaper than DIY.

So after quite a few years of searching, the planets aligned and I found a K31 and I had money spare. Big shout out to Juststarting for the heads up on this one. Managed to snaffle this rifle just before it was put online for sale.

And before anyone asks: yes, the name tag was present under the buttplate. Very pleased about that.

Seems I got Walter from Zurich's rifle. I will be researching this further. I will look after it Walter , I promise.

Serial number puts it at a 1955 build.
Stock is in good condition. Metalwork, bolt and bore in excellent condition.
