I got a phone call this arvo. My dealer just traded a "Mauser" real cheap and thought I might be interested before he puts it up for sale
So I dashed in ASAP!
It's an Ankara in 8x57mm, and not original, but quite nice. And it shoots pretty good too.
It even came with twelve rounds of FMJ "FNM 9-69" surplus and six rounds of Winchester 170gn Powerpoint ammo.
I came home and grabbed some of my Lee 180gn cast, gas-checked bullets, in pure lead and 7-1/2 shot, on 36gn of AR2206H and went to try it out. They run around 1780fps and 2000fps in my M1904/39. In this one they ran around 1880fps and 2110fps.
I bore sighted it, and at 50m with the sight at 200m, the sight picture was about 300mm higher than the bore. First five lead rounds went into the dirt under my targets, about 500mm low. So I dragged the sight up to 800m and shot another group on the top right target for a 50mm group, 45mm low and 35mm to the right. Then I put five of the 7-1/2 shot loads on the top left target for a 50mm group 100mm low and 40mm to the right. If my Marlin .44 Magnum could shoot lead like this I'd be rapt with it
