I've been using the BLO/Turps/wax mixture.

A little shoe polish tin, or in my case, an empty slug gun pellets tin works well.

Mix 1 part BLO, one part turps and one part beeswax.

Best mixed on a nice warm day. Put the tin out on the sun, get it warm and stir occasionally. Once cooled you get a nice paste. Rub on sparingly, leave it for 10-15 mins then buff off. Leaves a nice sheen that is not glossy. Do it as many times as you like. Finish gets better with time as you handle the firearm. Problem with wax on its own is it generally doesn't deal well with being handled.

The mixture will preserve the stock nicely and doesn't remove any finish or character. Also makes the stock water resistant.

Works better if warmed gently with a heat gun or left in the sun after application.

Best part is, if the stock gets a little nick or scratch you can just go straight over it with another coat and buff it out.

Edit: oops wrong thread, but lovely looking rifle JS, well done. I like it.

Actually it looks rubbish and worthless, give it to me so I can relieve you of the embarrassment of owning such a thing ;)

Check under the butt plate of your k11. A lot of the Swiss rifles have a tag under the butt plate with the details of the soldier they were issued to. My k31 doesn't have it as it was from a late private issued batch near the end of production when the Swiss switched to stgw 57

What if a person is not heavily experienced with tinkering with rifle internals etc. such as I. Is it still possible/advisable to get into the milsurp game?

My advice is be wary of exceptionally cheap Milsurps. Spend a few extra dollars and get a decent rifle. That $250 .303 is cheap for a reason.

You don't need any real expertise to own and use milsurp rifles. They operate exactly the same as any other rifle. YouTube is brimming with knowledge about anything you need to know such as disassembly of the bolt etc.

Milsurps by design are elegantly simple. Ask questions , read forums. You will learn just like all of us did at one point.

Personally I always value mechanical and barrel condition as the priority. Milsurps will have dings and scratches in the timber, it's just how they are. Stocks can be repaired and improved but a shot out barrel is worthless, no matter how pretty the wood is.

And just be aware that there is a lot of snobbery in collecting Milsurps. Rise above it and ignore it. It's your gun, do what you like with it. Unless you want to sporterise it, in which case you should be drawn and quartered lol.

yes, everyone should have at least 7 milsurps, :allegedly: it might actually be the law :unknown: .

First bit of common sense law I've ever heard of  Though I don't think I have enough milsurps, as a law abiding citizen I must correct this. :drinks:

So I didn't actually get to bring her home today, they put the permit in for the carcano 6.5x52mm and it was rejected.
Apparently its registered as a 6.5x54.
The dealer assumed it to be a clerical error, which they are fixing up and I'll head back down to collect it on thursday.
But I've been doing some reading and a bunch of carcanos where captured and had the chamber lengthened 1.5mm and were given to Greek troops and others.
Either way it will fire the 6.5 Carcano round (picked up 100 of them) and i won't be able to tell until i can get a better look at the markings and measure some fired brass.
The 'x54' is a .264 pill, yet the barrel would of still been .268, would of been s**t, but not as s**t as bringing a knife to a gun fight lol!

I did a chamber cast of mine as soon as I got it home just to be sure it was 6.5x52mm.

None at all.
But, the 160gn Hornady .264" RN obturates enough to work very well.
Which is enough to get the rifle shooting while I sourced other options, cast lead sized through a .270" sizing die I made out of a 7/8" bolt. And custom CNC bullets from brass.

Push a patch into the bore just ahead of the throat.
Then I cut a piece of plastic strip about 10mm wide and 50mm long. Roll it up and drop it into the bolt lug recess where it springs out to prevent filling the recess with any casting alloy. Then heat up some chamber casting alloy from Northern Smelters - I use an empty fish can and a propane torch. It melts at some ridiculous temperature like 70C, then pour it into the chamber. Give it a minute to set, then tap it out with a rod from the muzzle - dead easy and takes all of five minutes to do.

Turns out what I have is an Terni M91/38 short rifle (slightly bubba'd), better pics, shoot report and actual chamber size to follow soon.

Managed to score 115 in a 4 position shoot.

I have a new blank front sight coming, as I want to zero it for the ammo I use (handloads). It was zeroed by the Swedish armoury for the little 80gn FMJ Norma cased training rounds which are near impossible to find now.
