Pulled Trigger On First Buy Ever

Post by Lokvo » 08 Dec 2016, 7:57 am

Hey guys,

After months of farting around/procrastinating and doing all the necessary legal requirements in obtaining a rifle license I finally ordered two of my very first guns ever. Now to just suffer through the wait for them to get delivered.

Henry Golden Boy (I know, I know it's a bit too pretty)

&

CZ 455 (Orderd the Nikon P-Rimfire 2-7x32 for it)

Haha, well I figured go with relatively high quality rifles right off the bat to save myself buyer regrets later on.

Two very nice rifles. I own a CZ 455 American and a friend lets me shoot her Henry Golden Boy. You have made great choices.

Cheers mate. Yeah, I didn't make the decision quickly, it was a painstakingly long process but I'm just really anal like that. I have to make sure what I'm getting is of good quality with an excellent reputation. And I hope/believe I've done that with the Henry & CZ455

It takes both .22 (Long, Short & Long Rifle)

I have two Henrys, a .22 and a 45-70, both great rifles. I'm sure you will enjoy yours. Great choices and a good entry point into the hobby. Having an open sight rifle will also make you a better shooter. CZ is nice too.

Good to know that Henry's and CZ's are considered good buys here! :)

I expect to receive these in the next few days. I've done a bit of research and can't quite decipher; does the 455 disassemble exactly like the 452? I can only find 452 disassembly vids.

Also when I receive them, is it good to generally disassemble them all the way and clean all parts (internal and external) aside from the barrel? or will breaking it down enough so I can get bore access fore cleaning be enough? Complete first timer and research is causing confusion with some saying complete strip and clean and others saying just the barrel.

Cheers.

The CZ will come with a manual and instructions on how to break it down. Just clean the bore and go shooting.

If you are going to disassemble your shiny new rifles, do yourself a favour, get some decent quality hollow ground/gunsmithing screw drivers. But as mentioned just a decent bore clean is usually enough for a new rifle. Don't expect amazing things right away. A lot of new .22s can take a few hundred rounds to bed in and come right. Try a few different ammo types and have fun.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Yes I actually sort of went anal on the gunsmith tool sets and bought a whole gamot of quality hollow ground screw drivers, inch-lbs torque wrench screwdriver, gun smith brass punch set. It was endless I tell ya! lol.

No worries, so at this stage just a good bore clean will do? sounds good to me, prospect of completely breaking down a rifle as a newbie was really daunting to me but I would've given it a hot go for sure.

I was the same re breakdown of my rifles Lokvo. But it is really easy to break down a B/A rifle. Lever action is a bit trickier with certain brands.

FWIW,
My 455 had oil between the metal and the stock. Disassemble completely and wipe both down thoroughly.

Actually even though just a bore clean may be enough to get me going, I think I'll actually break it down, if it's anything like the 452 disassembly even an idiot like me should be able to do it without destroying the firearm lol. If anything just to get to know my own 455 better :)

Update: Just installed my 7 gun safe! :D

The CZ is a simple gun to break down, not that you really need to, just run a patch through the bore and wipe down the bolt and raceways. I actually just gave the action a squirt of aerosol degreaser and then gave a drop of oil on the action before I took it out to shoot.

Deb, my friend who owns the Golden Boy, tells me she just shoots a spay of aerosol gun cleaner into the action every few thousand rounds as well as pulling a boresnake down the barrel every once in awhile.

The trick to having a 22 is to not to go overboard on the cleaning. A patch and/or brush down the bore every now and then and a little, I said a LITTLE, oil on the moving parts when needed.

Good tips, duly noted :) and yes I'll make sure to not over saturate with lube/oil, question is how to know the right amount?

When I lube the bolt on my CZ455, I use a drop about the size of a grain of wheat.

Thanks oldmateadz. How is your experience with the BDC reticle? have you used the Nikon shot app designed for our particular scope that calculates poa's at different distances while also factoring in the specific 22LR ammo you use.

Update:

Apologies for the gratuitous giddiness but I just received some of my rifle accessories today;
