gun length

Post by TheGreenwolf » 04 Apr 2017, 10:43 am

hi guys,

i am planning to make something to transport my guns in for both now and in the future.

can anyone tell me the standard size of the following.

model 700 remington - standard non modified size from the factory, if they come in different lengths whats the average and max length.

lee enfield 303 no3 or no4.

my thinking is to make a box for what i have now but if i have room i might plan for the future.

i dont think i will buy a longer gun like a mauser and i think i will operate a fairly default rig for the model 700.

It will depend on barrel length. A 26" 700 will be close to 1200mm.
No.1 and No.4 Rifles are around 1150mm.

I was going to do similar but I can't make a box for what you can buy them for.
I'm using one of these - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251069364616
No handle so it doesn't snag on stuff.

Geez, shows you the mark up we're getting stung with on stuff when a pelican case is 2-3 times what you can buy a steel safe for.

I wouldn't class this box as a "safe" exactly, but it's far more secure than required for transporting firearms in Vic, and probably sufficient for NSW/ACT.
A Pelican case is a lot more refined than a simple steel box with some hinges, a keyhole and a coat of paint.
I had planned to build a steel box that was fitted into the shape of the vehicle, but for the cost of just the materials it'd make more sense to buy this safe and modify it to the shape I need. But for now I'm using it as is as it allows me to use it in any vehicle very easily, with the option of taking it into a building if required.

yep its just to take them to the range so just a box...no real requirements accept for "affixed to the vehicle" which can be just a bike lock.

Get a wooden ruler that you get supplied when you start a new school year.

because that helps when you dont have the object to measure it from.

Anything over 1200mm will accommodate the far majority of firearms

If you are wanting to make one yourself Dave, have a look at the pics of one I posted in the "Project 50" thread.

yep thats basically what i have in mind gamerancher. not sure if i will make the whole box myself or just find something the correct length and modify the inside.

i just dont like the idea of buying a plastic case with foam in it for the rifles that costs $200 and has no compartments for little goodies.
