.243Win package deal

Post by taffy4x4 » 15 Apr 2017, 5:48 pm

Hi,
I'm looking at buying my son a rifle for his birthday, he want's a .243, and within my budget of $800 there appears to be two package deals that suit, Remington 783 and Savage axis.
Do any of you have any experience with either of these guns, or are there other options that would work.
Cheers.

Personally I'm not a fan of the package deals as they often have junk scopes
You can get Ruger Americans for $875 with a Vortex Crossfire, which is at least a decent scope.
And they have the Howa 1500 in .243 for $800 with a 3-9x40.
Or you can buy the Howa 1500 Varmint in .243 for $569 and put your own scope on it.

My brother and I have bought two Ruger American .243 Predators in the last few months, both for $765 from our local dealers, and put $230 Bushnell AR Optics 4.5-18x40's on them.

I do like Remingtons and still have a 788 I bought in 1971. The reviews rate the Savage as the better buy. As this will be his first firearm you need to let your son see which one he is more comfortable with and fits him better.

I like Remington, and loved my 788 in .222, but for me Ruger makes a better rifle for the money.

For that price I'd look at the ruger americans or the howa 1500s personally.

I ended up with a Howa in .243 cos a buddy did not go through with his licence and I was kind of stuck with it.It had a 22 inch barrel and plastic stock but shot very accurate out the box like they said it would. The barrel is pitted because I let it get wet but the action is made of different steel and better protected.I am about to rebarrel and fit a custom stock So plus one for the Howa.

I bought a Rem 783 in .243 a couple of years ago when the package deals were scope and rifle for $549. The Axis was slightly dearer, I went with the 783, felt all along that I should have gone the Axis. Sold the 783 at a profit when the price of the packages went up and bought myself a Tikka with some cash I had put away.

The 783 was accurate, and light, and felt nice to handle. The bolt throw is long and the bolt head being flat was annoying, and would always sit closer to my scope than I was happy with (difficult to reload quickly). At the time extended aftermarket mags were not available, however you can get them now. Having moulded points for mounting slings was always something that bugged me - if you want to fit a bipod you are best off cutting them off and drilling a hole to glue a sling swivel in.

The turning point for me was when I came across a mob of goats and was fumbling with the bolt because I was not accustomed to the length of throw / how far the bolt head came up / the odd shape of it. Certainly not that big an issue in the scheme of things but it just bugged me.

Trigger was very nice though.

Honestly, for the money, and I say this as someone who bought a Tikka, buy the Howa package. Way more aftermarket options for the Howa than the 783 or the Axis, much better value for money. Hope this has helped :)

Consider a Marlin x7. I have two and happy with both. Good trigger once you get used to it. Cheap and cheerful.

If it's mainly for hunting he could be better off with the Marlin. They a fair bit lighter than the Howas.

Thanks everybody for the feedback. My son decided to go for the 783, however I think it had more to do with the low cut top the girl from Shooters Delight who sold it to him was wearing than anything else, but he was happy and at the end of the day that's what counts.
Cheers

I have a S&W pistol sitting in the bottom of the safe because of a sales lady in a short skit and a very low cut top.
