Lever action recommendations

Post by Patty93 » 29 Apr 2017, 8:14 pm

Hi lads,

Looking at a level action, got a bit of a crush on the Marlin 1895 SBL in 45-70, the short, stainless barrels are just pure eye candy and with that size round pack a giant punch :D. Now we all know their not a cheap rifle to run with the cost, so I'm asking you guys if their is anything else along the same lines which I have not considered that a- look this sweet, b- have such great quality, and b- can drop large game out to 200m.

Thanks in advance.

What are you going to be shooting with it?
Have you used the 45-70 before?

have shot 45-70 before, used a mates with a 24" barrel and fell in love with it. Want it to shoot buffalo and hopefully take it internationally in the future for elk and bears.

Shoot lead - then it's not so pricey to run. Load it down if the recoil is hurting you.

Well you might be able to load a Marlin that is in 444 Marlin up to do what you want, I don't know for sure. Here in the US Uberti is offering a clone of Winchester 1886 in 45/70, but it has case hardened receiver and blued barrel, which I personally find beautiful.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

You could get a Marlin or, if you have style and taste, you could get a Henry.

Patty93, can't help you with alternatives, but I did recently got to handle and shoot that exact model. I loved it. My experience was offhand with a red dot sight. Absolutely loved the gun. The recoil was very manageable. Definitely on my wishlist for the forseeable future.

In terms of running costs... After it's sighted in, the kind of game you'd hunt with it, a pack of ammo like leverlution or something like that, goes a long way, so it may look expensive but it's not. For everything else, there's casting.

I have a marlin SBL in 45/70. Best rifle I own. Still have a No3 Ruger carbine but age has wearied me and it is too brutal now. The SBL being heavier is more manageable. I use cast bullets and fire it a lot

Why would you steer clear of Henry's? I have two, they are excellent rifles.

Well there isn't thread after thread of pages complaining about Henry quality, nor is it a crapshoot buying one and hoping you get a good one. But hey Marlins are awesome, long as it's JM stamped blah blah blah....

Each to their own, Henry's are good.
Winnies are good
Marlins are sometimes good

Sorry but the Henrys now aren't the Henrys of old different manufacturers, they all eject like a limp fish, ( just fall out)and no loading gate is a waste of time shooting in Aust conditions.I know there is no bad reps, but don't you find it strange there are alot of good 2nd hand ones avalibility. Bought 2 couldn't get rid of them fast enough.
Each to his own but I would rather own a rem made marlin I could buff up than a modern henry.

I've got an older Marlin 444s i load up the same bullets as my 44 Mag. Makes loading simpler. I would recommend Marlins, they get a bad rap about the Remlin thing, ive never seen a bad one.... Check out marlins trigger, they are a bit floopy and some people dont like them. I changed mine to a Wild West happy trigger. If you want to put a scope or dot on it they are the easiest

Maybe if you limp wristed marlin owners could work an action like a man they would eject properly. Also Henry's shoot straight, so what's in the tube is enough , no need for a top up. And I very rarely see 2nd hand Henry's, lots of marlins in near new condition. Back to you ;)
