Remington 700 Mountain VS Winchester M70 Extreme Weather

Post by TBJ » 21 May 2017, 3:46 pm

Hi all
I am looking for a new samber rifle and have seen and held both of these guns, they are both stainless, with the same Bell and Carlson stock and a similar light weight, what are your opinions on Remington 700 Vs. Winchester M70?
also what are the pros and cons of these two rifles? and any other rifles you guys think I should look at?
also what about detachable mag kits for the M70 I know there is heaps for the 700 but not sure about the M70?
Thanks
Jez

I don't know about Winchester, but I would veer away from Remington. Their quality control has declined over the years. If it were me personally, I would look at the Tikka line of rifles.

I've shot many tikka rifles as many of my mates have them, and whilst they're good rifles and very accurate, I'm not a fan of the synthetic stocks they come with, and I'm kind of wanting something else, that also why I'm not thinking about a sako as the difference between them and the tikka's are not worth the extra $$.
what sort of quality issues are you talking about with Remington, you're not the first person to mention this to me?
also anyone know about the new Model 70's assembled in Portugal, I've heard they're possibly the best M70's ever made? what does anyone else think of these? what is the M70's accuracy like? sub-moa?

yeah .270 minimum for Sambar and .243 for other deer in Victoria I'm thinking probably .308 but I'm also considering 30-06 and .300WSM

Tomato.....tomata

Both are good , both are accurate. Like Ford vs Holden it just depends who you ask. Pick the one that shoulders best and you like the look of.

Don't know about their synthetic stocks. Think mine was made in Utah :unknown:

Yeah I handled both at shot show on the weekend both had smooth as glass bolts with the M70 a bit smoother, and have shot my grandfather's Pre-64 in .270 and my mates Rem 700 in .338. The new M70 is made in or "assembled in" Portugal so haven't heard much about them, and a few people have voiced their concerns on the new Rem 700 quality control. The Synthetic stock is a Bell & Carlson on both rifles of which I have shot with them on a Tikka and liked it.
I'm also wondering about accuracy can I expect sub-moa off a bench with both rifles?

Not sure. Can YOU shoot sub MOA off a bench??? ;) :friends:

If so, a good bedding job and a bit of load development will see sub MOA performance, if it doesn't shoot that way right out of the box.
Remember the M70 feather weight has a very light barrel so will not perform accuracy miracles on long strings of fire but should be able to reliably place a few shots into the same Point Of Impact. Assuming this is going to be a walk around/mountain rifle that will only see one or two shots in any sort of rapid succession?

Winchester all the way, mauser based action is hard to beat.
And dont worry about detachable magazines, I found it weird at first but its a trivial difference in the end.

What year? When did you buy?

Rem had a rough patch a while back with some ownership and factory shuffling.

I've gone and bought a Winchester Model 70 featherweight, should be here in a few months hopefully (was told 3-6 by my local) as winchesters shipment hasn't come in yet and I'm not willing to change what caliber I want. So very exited about this now just to finalize the last details such as scope and sling, thanks all for your help on my choosing, and I still want to pick up a Rem 700 soon but maybe I'll build it as a Long range shooter or just have another deer rifle.
