Fluted barrel

Anyone here have a rifle with a fluted barrel? The Howa I've chosen has one and it looks great, I just don't know what the main function of the flutes might be. I'm thinking heat dissipation.

Yeah I have one on my remington. Mainly heat dissapation also a little weight saving for the heavy barrels and I've heard people say it strengthens the barrel because the flutes create more surface area but I dunno how much faith I put in that idea

Yep, you're on the money.

Weight reduction and heat dispersion, while still keeping the barrel rigid.

Half a heavy barrel of sorts.

Surface area is about heat dissipation.

The fluting itself is about making the barrel more rigid which is definitely legitimate.

Think about bending a ruler flat side down... it's very easy.

Try to bend the same ruler with the edges facing up/down... You can't do it.

Same principle for the barrel.

Have some faith ;)

Not as good as a heavy barrel though.

A big of a gain without the excess weight though.

Well as it's a hunting rifle and I'm a big bloke weight isn't that big an issue. I like the idea though of it being a bit more rigid

Sounds like you're on the right track then.

It does at a little more weight, but that shouldn't be an issue as you've said.

Can't see any reason why you wouldn't buy a fluted rifle in your case.
See you on the firing line.
