Finally got my new rifle today. A Marlin 1895CB with 26" tapered octagonal barrel in the venerable 45/70. Beautiful gun. Going to sight it in tomorrow with some Winchester 300gn hollow points. Then perhaps take it spotlighting lol

I love new rifle day....

Handsome looking firearm. All my levers have octagonal barrels , makes a rifle look really nice.

45/70's are a hell of a load of fun to shoot, they make you laugh out loud and swear enthusiastically.
Amazing how often it invokes the "F" word when you give people a shot.

Edit:
Full length mag tube I noticed. Does that hold 7?

Beautiful rifle, that long barrel really makes it stand out. Does the weight move front to rear heavy as the tube runs down - or are you too sore to notice ;-)

I'll keep it. I know lots of people whinge about safeties on lever guns, but to be honest I like the peace of mind when cycling live rounds out of the mag.
What I'm not impressed with is the fact that sometimes the thing that gets pushed in by the lever that allows you to fire (proper name escapes me ATM) gets stuck and won't push in so you can't fire the gun. I'm hoping its just a matter of it wearing in.
Oh,and its not terribly accurate with the Winchester 300gn factory rounds, could only manage about s 6" group at 90m,but my 405gn hand loads seem to be pretty accurate

Hi bigpete. You can empty the mag by pushing in the gate all the way and letting the mag-tube-spring push the rounds down the tube, past the gate. It helps to give the exiting rounds a flick with your finger. Saw it on youtube via MarlinOwners.com
Regarding that beautiful hex barrel. Is it round at the chamber? If not, there will be less steel surrounding the chamber and pressures might need to be watched. Read it in McPherson.

BP I have a limb saver pad on my 336W - although I had to drill another hole in underneath the butt plate to accommodate for it.

How's the trigger on it? Have you scoped it for the moment?

Yeah I really like marlins; nice and functional too. FWIW my 336W also doesn't shoot factory ammo for s**t. Sure factory hits hard, but it's really only good for close range killing. Once I switched to lead, she really tightened up. I shot it out the 300m yesterday with Williams peeps and a Lyman tunnel front - no signs of keyholing albeit a whopping 150 inches of drop. I think she'd go close to putting them into 8 inches at that distance (if you could). I can't wait to see your data for the 1895CB!

Nice gun bigpete !
The recoil pad that came with my marlin SBL is a pachmayr decelerator. It is excellent. My rossi 44 mag with its stainless butt plate is way more annoying.
