Beginner shooter looking for omark 308

Post by Steviegee » 18 Aug 2017, 11:22 pm

Looking for an sportco/omark 308 to start shooting in f class
Fairly new to shooting and from a reasonable amount of research these seem to be the go to beginner rifle.
If anybody has or knows someone looking to part with one gratefully appreciated
Cheers

Have a look on Used Guns, there are three there at present from fair to reasonable. Not flash perhaps.

There have been a lot come and go. The better one's don't last long before being sold.

G'day Steviegee,
If you are already a member of a rifle club you could try the SARA website, there are usually 1 or 2 Omarks for sale, also ask around at the range, as some members have unused rifles at home they have upgraded from. I bought my first Omark that way for $100 including the Central sight. (OK, it was a while ago)

Not mine, and not for sale, but the old Omark's do make for an inexpensive entry level F-class rifle that will do you proud if you're on the ball.

Can you please expand on this a bit more? What do you mean by "upgraded"? (I'm also thinking about getting myself an omark)

The bolt head is held to bolt with a pin the pin on the upgrade is larger in diameter.

The old pin measures at 0.1215" and the new pin at 0.2175

Look for a 44B over the older 44.
The newer model 44B had the upgraded trigger, large bolt head pin, heavier barrel, wider forestock etc.
Serial numbers tell the models apart. 2 letters and 3 numbers are the older 44 models. EG: DGXXX
3 letters and 3 numbers are the 44B model. EG: SDWXXX.
Visually. The older 44's have the rounded full wood stock. The 44B has the square wide base, no top wood stock

Would a beginner do better with a 223 shooting 80s, I would put money on a 223 out shooting a 308 in a factory rifle.

A battered old original Omark may not be the bargain you think it may be.
One suitable for a beginner with some semblance of competitiveness in F class is going to cost a lot more.
These are the issues you may have to deal with in an original Omark of any vintage.
Barrel adaptor
Replacement barrel
Replacement stock
Drill and tap action for scope mount
Correctly mounting a 20moa rail - the adaptor is usually proud of the action and the rail bends when fitted up tightly turning a 20moa rail into a zero or worse rail and stressing the scope tube in the process. This is particularly noticeable with alloy rails.
Ignition issues
Extraction issues
Bolt head retainer
Now tally up the cost of resolving some or all of those issues and your bargain Omark won't be the bargain you thought it was.
After spending all that money and in the event you want to sell and you ask a realistic price you will be hit with 'but it's only an Omark'.
On the other hand a $250 original Omark will still shoot quit well with a 'seen better days' barrel with suitable factory ammunition

I think the Omark is best suited to its intended use.....Fullbore shooting. These are great rifles, for their intended purpose. Looks like i have found a good one today, but it's an undrilled/tapped rifle with the aperture sights, just like they should be. Plenty of other scope ready choices for F class in my opinion. Just my 2 Bob's.

It wont matter which one you get 44 or 44B they are both great rifles. I just bought a DK#%$ serial number and it's a ripper!!
