Bakelite? .22/410

Post by Daddybang » 18 Sep 2017, 7:37 am

Caught up with a mate on the weekend and got a couple of photos of his stevens survival rifle used by American bomber crews. Not sure if the stock is bakelite or lucite but it's made in the1940s and is extremely light.

FWIW My father's golf clubs had both 1 and 2 woods which had bakelite heads. It's very tough stuff.

Supposedly it was an early variety of plastic called 'Tennite'. Didn't stand up well to hard use. But this gun is certainly a collector item introduced ca 1939. Progenitor to the Savage M24 series.

Thanks for the info mate I was trying to think of the name for the third type of plastic. For some reason I couldn't get past tannerite!
which would make an interesting stock :drinks:

not really, it's more of a keepsake from my grandfather as are the rest of his guns, but I've heard CZ is coming out with a new combo gun, not sure of any details but being a CZ im sure it would be good

I've got a Savage 24 in 12g/.223
A great combo for when wandering in an area where your not sure what is gonna pop up in front of you.
Very quick and simple to flick from one cartridge to the other.

My only dislike is that it is very heavy.

This one of my mates is lighter than my stirling .22wmr which gives it a little bit of recoil when using the .410 but nothing over the top

Twice now I have missed out on savage Combo's. Both 22wm/20 g. Bloody all right for whistling foxes. But 12g would be better. Fit a reflex and bobs your uncle.

PS, Keep it jezz, it was your grandfathers. Enjoy the memories.

Well, I got to weighing mine, and it comes in (scope included) at a hefty 4.85 kgs.
Like I said it is heavy and I wouldn't like to go mountain hunting with it.

Here is a pic of an original advert for the Savage 24 Combos from the mid 1970s

Wish those prices were current.
