Anyone Own A Baikal 45/70 Double Rifle ?

Post by bigpete » 05 Nov 2017, 8:42 pm

I've been after one for years,I've been offered one at a pretty decent price,I've researched the s**t out of them, but I'd just like to hear some feedback from other owners before I bite the bullet.
I know they're not anywhere remotely near the same fit and finish of the traditional British or European doubles, that's of no concern. More interested in how they shoot and loads for them, how they handle,or if you've hunted with them.
Cheers,Pete

Ok, a mate that's no longer with us had one and told me that the triggers are not that balanced (weight of pull /creep) his words not mine... I never shot it so I cant give an opinion in that regard.. :unknown:

He did however take quite a few deer with it... Not sure this helps you.. But it's the best I can offer...

Surely these would be so rare that there's a pretty good chance you're both talking about exactly the same rifle?

Cool.... I'm sure you will love it... Despite the comment he made to me about the triggers, oldmate loved his and used it to good effect.....

I'll ask his family and see if anyone retained his load data notes ?... If so I will get a copy for you to review.... I know he would have liked that...

a friend of mine bought one of those a few years back.they are built like russian tanks but they don`t really shoot to point of aim.the old adage you get what you pay for holds very true.i believe my buddy traded his towards a merkle double rifle.

if you are looking for an inexpensive 45-70 rifle i suggest the NEF single shot in 45-70.you can also have this made into a 45-90 like i did.or if you like a 45-110.the latter looks really impressive around dusk.if i didnt know better you would think it was one of the large guns on a battleship.in the 45-70 i like the 405 grain bullets.now if you happen to have a brontosaurus roaming your neck of the woods step up to the 500 grain soft lead bullets.that one hurts on both ends.but the rifles don't break the bank and they are very good shooters

Actually I was looking for an inexpensive double rifle thank you
And I've already been loading 570gn cast in my Marlin so I'm no stranger to heavy bullets

Well all I can say is this gun is bloody awesome !
The seller said he'd shot Winchester 300gn HP ammo in it so I tried my 405gn Lee hard cast loads that I know shot the same through my Marlin. Lo and behold my first 2 shots freehand at 50m hit the 2" square with one barrel and just to the right with the other !
Then I decided to do a group test. Nothing super special but I got a nice 3-4" cluster from both barrels a bit low and to the right of target. A bit of adjustment and I was on. I tried some 300gn reloads but they shot crap so I'll use them in my Marlin.
Overall its a fairly plain gun and a little rough but its solid. The triggers are s**t but that really didn't seem to matter. Its really light and points bloody well. Feels like I'm carrying my Rossi 92 around. And its already blooded ;)
