Uncocking rimfire rifle for storage

Post by eeckle » 24 Dec 2013, 12:13 pm

Hi guys,

I know the subject of whether or not keeping bolts cocked has been debated for a bit, personally I like to keep mine uncocked for piece of mind.

For centre fires which have no problems with it, you just close the bolt, fire it and put it away. Easy.

What do you do for rimfire rifles which you shouldn't dry fire though?

I know some people put in empty 22 brass to practice dry firing, but is it ok to have an empty shell in the chamber for long periods of time? That seems like the kind of thing that might cause corrosion to me?

What to do?

Like you said, I wouldn't be storing my rifle with brass in it.

Brass tarnishes itself over time and I wouldn't want that sitting inside.

You should be able to uncock your 22 in the rifle...

When it is cocked lift the bolt handle and hold it up, while still holding it up squeeze the trigger, then lower the bolt handle.

This will gently uncock it as you let the pin forward slowly instead of 'firing' it forward.

Works in every rifle as far as I know. Everything I've ever fired anyway.

I usually do it for mine as part of cleaning to bolt too feel how smooth it goes each way.

Not a bad idea.

I normally just dryfire my centrefires and put them away after cleaning. That's probably a better method of feeling smooth movement than the upward cock of the bolt when you're working against the resistance.

And for me.

It must work for every bolt action rifle?

I can't think of any style of mechanism in a standard bolt action where it wouldn't let you do this?

All my .22's you can just uncock by hand , remove the bolt and grab the front end of the bolt and the bolt handle and give it a twist
easy its uncocked . But I store my rifles with the bolts out because they wont fit in the safe with all the bolts in :D

You can't do that for all though I don't believe.

Sako I think you need a de-cocking tool. The same for a few others I think, can't remember any specifically right now...

Thanks for replies guys.

I can uncock the bolt as explained by easing it down with the trigger pulled.

Cheers.
