Didn't take long

Post by YoungBuck » 02 Jan 2018, 6:54 pm

Well I did say that in 2018 that I'll be taking the plunge and getting a .243... well second day in I took the plunge  Picked up a T3X Lite SS in .243.
5 local gun stores that I called up didn't have stock of the scope that I'm after (Leupold VX-3i 3.5-10x40 CDS). Will need to source that from somewhere very soon.

Looks very nice indeed. A little  Now just need to start reloading, once the scope arrives.

Thanks gents, finger is getting very itchy. Everywhere I have contacted are out of stock of the 3.5-10 so I ended up upgrading a little to the 4.5-14x40 CDS. Magnumsports are sending it pronto, it should arrive tomorrow.

This will be my first Leupold scope mate so I've not had a CDS before.

I’m also a recent tikka convert (with a leuie scope) - suberb setup, the thing is boringly acurate, feels like cheating compared to the cheap setups I’ve used in the past. Quite terrifying in the field; bang flop, bang flop, bang flop (etc) You won’t have any regrets OP!

Nice rifle Youngbuck. Let us know how she goes once you have everything set up. I have a PTA in for the same rifle only in .223Rem. Very much looking forward to picking it up.

For a hunting rifle I think 4.5 is a bit high myself. Mine are 2-7 and 3-9s. Particularly for a round designed for medium game. Shooting rabbits only would be different. Personal preference of course.

Just need to start reloading and buy a 3006 now.

Yes will do mate, once I put some rounds through I will give a brief write up.

This crossed my mind as well, 4.5x might be a little high but I'll see how I go. The .22 Mag has a 4-16x on it and I find the 4x magnification fine for walking around with. If worse come to worse, I can sell the 4.5-14x and get the 3.5-10x down the track.

HA! I'm not a big unit - I think a 3006 would destroy my shoulder

Contry to most myths it's the reverse. Bigger you are more it hurts. But a 308 would be a good choice also. Just a bit woosy.

So, when I'm hunting I always set scope at 3 or 4x. Unless in very open country like a farm then usually 5 or 6.
Depends on where and what the intended quarry is. Also sitting or walking will change the preferred setting.

So this arrived this morning... :D
Problem is I am sick as a dog. Had the in-laws come around for new years and my sister IL was kind enough to share her cold around, I've been progressively getting worse since Tuesday
Will be a few days before I head to the block to sight it in, if not next week.

Went to little river range today, spent nearly 4 hours there, was actually quite a bit of fun.

Among the plenty of rimfire shots I put down range, it was also a good time to check the groupings of some of the .243 ammo I have. See below for results, each at 100m.

But the buffalo river in 70gr performed the best by far.

Yep will definitely be getting the CDS, but I need to test some more ammo before I send it in. I want to see if there's a cheaper round the rifle likes before locking it in as the buffalo River 70gr was about $45 from memory... Not keen on that price long term.

Yeah I got mine for a Bullet Factory 30cal all-rounder @ 2500fps/40,000psi; cheap, accurate and expands fine for when I wanna hunt. Must say, took some doing - the BC is unknown for these so I had to gather actual trajectory at a variety of distances before extrapolating my specs.

Getting back to your 243, price-wise Nosler projectiles are pretty hard to beat.

Can you post ammunition? (not sure if it's even legal)

Generally speaking, forget about freight posting/freighting ammo...way too expensive...

Roughly how much are we talking for postage?

Gonna have to disagree with you there - if you can get an unbeatable price on projectiles (and you buy in bulk) it can be cheaper to get em delivered. For example, I get 30cal jacketed for just under 43c a pill and that’s including postage.
