Removing action from the stock.

Just curious. I clean my centrefire rifles everytime I shoot them even if just 1 or 2 shots. But how often do you guys remove the action from the stock when cleaning. Every time or just say once a year? Or maybe if it rains.

For stainless actions about once a year. Even stainless actions still have nickel plated components like trigger, magazine etc, so should still be cleaned more regularly especially if they've got wet

For blued actions definitely if they get wet or if been very dusty conditions.

Surprisingly my rifles POI dont change after action removal clean and reassembly, i do use an inlb torque wrench for reassembly to ensure consistency. Something most gun shops dont do, yesterday i had a well known gun shop fit a timney trigger to a titanium rem 700 action, i did some testing and checking when i got home and discovered they had over 100 inlb on front action bolt! And the trigger was fouling ever so slightly on trigger guard. Should have just fitted it myself as i had to disassemble check, fix then reassemble...

Probably every say half a dozen shoots or so. I find that a fair bit of cleaning stuff gets down there and dust and s**t gets under the barrel as it is free floating. I often or normally have some other reason to remove it.

Im lazy to but I like to fiddle. That includes taking the action off the stock so it can be oiled and cared for. I find it a nice thing to do while watching TV. :D

So for yonks I cleaned & removed to stock everytime I fired it. Lately I still clean every time I shoot but only remove the stock every now and again. I'll just keep doing what I'm doing now.

Thanks for the advice gents.

I take the muzzleloader barrels out of their stocks when I clean them after each shoot, the rest probably only once a year

Haven't actualy tested it. But a couple of rifles are very reliable. A couple not so. So a couple could be changing.

it's an occasional thing to be done for me
sometimes not for 5 years or more :unknown:
usually I get the urge to do a bit of maintenance or there has been a problem :|

Hardly ever, never taken my 22lr out lol, don't have anything precise enough to torque it back down with all the others just when necessary and depending on design ( pain in the arse or not ) the shotguns get fully disassembled every 3 clears or so though

Only if something really gets in there like shooting in a dusty area for the day. Or a splash of rain.

If all I've done is sit it on the bench for a few hours on a nice day I clean the exterior and barrel, I don't strip it.

in all honesty I own 2 torque wrenches for doing up the king screws but find the gorilla grip tight on the front screw and the just tight on the back is plenty
I saw that tip from Nick Harvey years ago but he may have changed his mind on torque wrenches now :unknown:
its what I do when I don't have a torque wrench handy
for a 22 hold the forearm and the barrel as you tighten don't let the action or barrel bend

So what order to do screws up with...Front or rear first...?

*Best to tighten rear first then feel for barrel movement as tightening the front...?

*Or Get both firm first, then give a smack to the butt stock on floor to seat, then tighten home as above...

Whats the concensus....? ? ? ?....

So marlin recommends for xl7 bolt actions. Assemble front first then rear.
Disassemble in reverse.

always gorilla grip the front first
then just tighten the rear while holding the rifle upright with your hand wrapt lightly around the forearm and barrel feeling for movement
there should be none with good bedding
there should be no movement at the tang area as well

When people say you can't have telescopic or folding stocks because it makes rifles easier to conceal I don't think they realise in most cases only 2 bolts hold the barrelled action on the stock and it can be removed or installed in less than 1 minute.

The only folding stocked rifle I would consider would be the Barret MRAD or AI AT which allows you to change barrels and calibre very quickly, yes these rifles are expensive but you save on buying glass.

Thanks marksman...
I find putting the tikka's back together the hardest...they are (well mine are) very tight in the recoil lug area & the stock binds on the sides of the action...
No they are not bedded.
