Carrying a rifle on a motorbike.

Questions about Victorian gun and ammunition laws. Victorian Firearms Act 1996.

Carrying a rifle on a motorbike.

Post by sports » 14 Jan 2018, 6:56 pm

Hi all,

I do a bit of adventure bike riding in Victoria. I'd really like to carry a rifle on some of my multi-day rides to snag a rabbit or 2 for meals. Does anyone have any ideas around the legalities of carrying a rifle on a bike?

Thanks in advance.

Use a generic hardcase, keep it locked to the bike (and the case itself locked of course!) and expect to be pulled over now and then, no problem!. I wouldn't suggest doing what we did in the old days of strapping a pump action across the handlebars, probably get you shot off the bike now. Cheers.

I did it for years. But don't ride any more.
Generic looking case on the back.

The instruction leaflet accompanying a Central sight I purchased in 1959 advised the purchaser to remove the sight when transporting the rifle on a motorcycle!!

In a fishing rod bag that's lockable. Strap it on the bike where it's standing up and clearly visible, attach a couple of lures to the top or the zip/strap/latch, put some fishing related stickers on the bike and no one will know the difference.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

You used to be able to hop on a bus with a rifle bag over your shoulder.

Imagine trying that today

At a Shot Show here in Melbourne at least 3 years ago I asked several Police officers manning the Police stand the same question. Mind you I have been carrying rifles to Little River range for many years and pistols to Springvale and Oakleigh Pistol Clubs on a bike after reviewing the Police LRD web site rules.
The Police members confirmed my view that so long as it is not obvious to anyone else what you are carrying it is perfectly legal. I don't carry rifles in hard bags but in normal carry cases wrapped in towels and strapped to the bikes Ventura bag rack. The Police had no issue with this procedure at all.

Huh.

I thought this post was going to be about best methods of physically carrying a rifle on a bike.
[We've tried most of them, but keep coming back to a short/light rifle slung over your back]

Never considered it might be about the legalities of carrying a rifle on a bike on a public road...

I like the roof-rack idea!
He might be able to incorporate a roll cage at the same time!
And then maybe some airbags!!

One point/question about the idea of maybe shooting a rabbit or such while out on public land/forest reserve.

In QLD, we have very restricitive laws about taking meat off-property.
If we were holding a shire 1080 baiting campaign, we couldnt bring our own meat to the baiting location, if it was off-property.
One of the few things the Newman govt left us, was removing some of those restrictions, so we could easier source meat for 1080 poison baiting for wild dogs.
[One of the very few positives they left us...sigh]

Would shooting a rabbit/etc on public land, have the same restrictions on it as we have here in QLD?
Would you risk prosecution for carrying the meat?

[Asking because I'd like to know..]

Done that quite a few times, on bus and train. Even got stopped by my local police at the end of my street ( inner city Sydney) when I was bringing a rifle back from Safari. Asked to see it, showed them licence & transfer papers, they had no problem with my public carriage at all. Hard rectangular case with Gibson sticker on it helps lol

I have asked our local cop about this so as we could carry rifles on the road on an ag bike the answer was ( If its carried in a soft case the case has to be locked or
fixed to the bike rifle has to have bolt out and kept in a seperate compartment to the rifle and a trigger lock fitted to the rifle
A hard case should be lockable and fitted or locked to the bike bolt removed from rifle and kept in seperate compartment and trigger lock fitted as well
both cases should be made as inconspicuos as possible to what it is carrying ) he said this is what they look for but i suppose other states have their own laws and
requirements

An old timer at my gun club was telling me how when he was a cadet in the 1950s/60s, he was selected by his unit to take part in an inter-unit Bren gun stripping contest. He was given a working Bren Gun and told to take it home with him over the weekend for practice. So he slung it over his shoulder and rode home on his bicycle.
