Bucket list

Post by Noisydad » 16 Jan 2018, 4:55 am

It's "Million More March" coming up. What's on your long gun bucket list and would you really take the leap if one of 'em becomes available? What if more than one is available? My wish list somewhat exceeds my income list;
1862 Smith carbine (Pietta repro. Fingers, toes and eyes currently crossed)
1873 Springfeild Trapdoor
.577-450 Martini Henry
Remington revolving carbine

Just added a Gibbs .45 cal long range to the collection.
I'd love to to add a Farquarson in a classic "big game" calibre but that is definitely a " tell him he's dreamin' " rifle.

In keeping with my simple tastes a Howa scout rifle 308 and on the dream list either a rolling block or high wall in 45-70 for some serious fun.
So far CZ 455 22lr, Ruger american ranch 223

Million March is extremely ambitious.

Having every licensed firearms owner in the country go out and buy a firearm in March just won't happen. Perhaps half million March might have been within the realms of possibility.

The only firearms that I really want now are the ones that I can't have in the C, D, and H class

My whish list includes a Ruger 10/22, a Remington 700 Sendero in 300 win,mag,
a Beretta Silver pidgin, a Verney-Carron Speedline in .223 and why not a high end pair of matching Holland and Holland shotguns while im here dreaming

Personally I won't be making a firearm purchase this March. All my disposable income is being consumed by other hobbies at the moment.

March will see in a new rifle! There are a few I want that are long time away. But on short notice, a 20" SxS hammer shogun is on the list. And a 16" 1:8 223. I have a 223 in the same configuration, but I'd like something shorter. Also, a classic Enfield would be good. And RAR compact 22lr with night vision. Aaaaanyway, as you can see March will see 1 or more boom sticks.

I don't know that I have a bucket list, but there are more rifles that I want.
Ruger Americans in 6mm Creedmoor, 6.5mm Creedmore, 300BLK, .308, 7.62x39mm, 450 Bushmaster and .300WinMag - plus whatever other chamberings they bring out.
Ruger Precision Rimfire.
Rossi Puma Trappers in .357 and .44 Magnums.
.45/70 Sharps
RN50

And more milsurps!
M1904 Portuguese Mauser in 6.5mm
M1903A1
Kar88
Kar98k
6.5mm and 7.7mm Arisakas.
M1903 Mannlicher Schonauer 6.5mm
K31
P17
M95 in 8x56mm
Krag-Jorgenson
MAS36
Lebel rifle
And probably others I can't recall just now.

What model are you going with? The 20 inch barrel with Iron siights looks like it would make for a great slug gun.

Yeah going for the 20" the 24" is just a touch long for the missus to use comfortably!!
Its limited to 21/2" shells but that's plenty for the intended purpose ( havin fun!!)
Might fit it with a red dot just cause!!

I’m a man of simple tastes. Would like the following additions to fill in the gaps of my existing rifles.

CZ527 .22 Hornet
Lithgow LA102 .243 Win

That’s about it.

I have a Marlin lever .410, I mainly use it for shooting rats when cleaning out sheds, pens ect. My partner finds it a little on the heavy side, it also has enough power to put unruly sheep down out to about 50m when using slugs.

What's the barrel length of the marlin?
The main use for the Henry will be fun plinking sessions and of course any joe blakes that pose a threat. Also a camp gun if any dogs get to close to us(last time out we had one getting cheeky but we were on crown land so couldn't shoot!) It's probably gonna be a bit of a wait from ordering to delivery but that'll give me something to look forward to!! :drinks:

I have the reamer but have had the biggest issue with dies and go guage. Plus, caah has been funnelled into projects around the property. It's on the backburner but I'm still keen to do it.

JS, if you're going a 16" 223rem, keep in mind that leaves you no room to recrown or set back the barrel if anything nasty happens.

Did not occur to me. I am still thinking about it, I'm not planning on messing the crown up... But definitely something to consider, it didn't even occur to me. Thanks!

I always look at the chamber end of any rifle barrel with a view to possible re-chambering. Has it got enough metal there to be re-chambered?
When getting barrels built I always get them profiled so that they can be re-chambered at least a couple of times. You'll wear the throat out before the bore so an apparent "shot out" barrel will have a new lease of life with a "cut and shut". I've had a few of my rifles that have given me extended barrel life by doing this, both target and hunting rifles . I'll add that they are always well and truly long enough as well.
If you buy a barrel that is already at minimum legal length, this is an option you won't have.

On the subject, how long do you reckon a 308w barrel would last operating at 2500fps, 41000psi?
At what point does lack of maintenance become patina?
