Yeah , BFS . It still shoots 50’s well , but the 1-12 twist rate means it shoots 60’s quite well now. I’m going to try some 60 gn soft points at some stage, if they work well it should give the old 222 a lot more versatility. As for lighter loads , I ended up buying my old hornet rifle back ....

$650 stix. A bit expensive for something that needs a rebarrel, but that’s rebel for ya . The main reason I deal with them is they have the biggest in store stock on reloading supplies and tend to have lots of old collectable rifles and parts. Besides that I’ve always got good in store customer service.

That’s rebel’s store price, they probably have the highest store prices on second hand in Brisbane. Is a old bsa worth it ? Dunno. I’ve been told their a quality rifle, might have to check out azza’s in the flesh if I can catch him at the range one day.. . Guns in Brisbane seem to be more expensive than other regions but. South oz and WA seem to be cheaper

Anyone know the barrel twist in the BSA .222? I bought mine new in 1975 and has the original barrel.

I've booked it in to a gunsmith for next month for a small job (one of the pins that a clip goes onto to hold the bolt slider in place has inexplicably disappeared, other than that the gun is in great condition, it's had less than 500 rounds through it, perhaps the scope could be replaced) ... wondering if a gunsmith can eyeball a barrel and determine the twist?

Great vid on the mighty 222 from this old guru ... turns out that this caliber is his favourite "such a gentleman's gun, so much more pleasant to shoot than the .223". He also says it's more accurate

I wish there was a way to hit a ''like'' button in this forum like you get in twitter. Thnx Stix.

I guess the 1:14 twist is why these things don't like anything bigger than 50gns. I bit like why the Howa 204's with the 1:12's prefer something under 40gns

took the old BSA 222 to the range the other day after not firing it for a long long time. Bought it in 1975 new and it wouldn't have had any more than 500 rounds through it so the barrel should be in good nick. Ammo was stuff that I reloaded sometime last century, and using Sierra 50gn Spitzers. I had no idea how it would should but was pleasantly suprised by the results on the 100 meter targe. Next task is to tighten up what was a pretty sloppy reloading regime to improve accuracy.

What's the load mate?

I find 20.5gn of 2206H behind a 50gn Pill seems to shoot well in the 222. 2207 also goes great as does the ol 4198. I think I've also loaded 8208 and it was the same sort of results, pretty much anything I tried in the 222 CMC Mountaineer shot well - especially behind a 50gn pill in pretty much any brand I've tried.

Bigfella I was using ADI Benchmark I powder that I bought years ago. Still got tons of it left. I've no idea how much I used as I loaded these a long time ago and couldn't find my notes on how much powder I loaded.. Trying out some new gear on foxes next week (thermal camera, LED light for scope etc) so have to load up some more. The manual says 20.0 as a starter and 22.5 as max load for 50gn projectile so I'll probably go 21 gns to be on the safe side. When I get back I'll do some test loads going up to max in 0.5gn increments to see what happens.

The thing I found with the change in twist from the original 1-14 barrel is my rifle likes projectiles with more bearing surface. Doesn’t shoot boat tails well, and it also likes a slower powder .BM2 over the ar2207 that it liked previously . Hope someone finds this information useful. Cheers

Found an old box of Australian made 222 projectiles in the bottom of my reloading box. Made by "Super Cartridge Pty Ltd" and google search says they folded in the late 1970's due to some sort of legal dispute over a patent infringement.

Comparing side by side with the Sierra Spitzers they are a little bit shorter and unlike the Spitzer which has a slight boat tail the Super has a completely flat bottom. Packaging of both bullets says 50 gns but on my scales the Sierra Spitzer is 49 gns and the old Super is 52 grains so they look to be a tad heavier. I was going to put them aside but I'll load up a few and see how they go. No point wasting them...
