have heard good things about 17 hmr accuraccy D243, and lithgows, but i'll tell ya about my mates sako 17hmr finfire. brand new rifle, took it too the range , and from the start, every second round would fail to eject, every third case would have a split in the neck ! used a set of car keys to get the cases out, and after about thirty decided to call it quits . quized the local gunshop and was told that can happen with the 17hmr. the ammo was cheap winchester super x 20 gr. switched to federal v max. out of thirty five only one split case and failed to eject. don't want to put anyone off 17hmr, but this is what did happen. i would advise premium ammo. hornady would be my pick. cheers

a lot of people probably don't have a issue. bad batch of ammo ? cheap brass ? dunno. put this up to see if any others had similar issues with 17hmr

heaps do but after the Anschutz's I had I think it is more a crap chamber issue than a case one as in mine you could not even chamber 90% of that Winchester crap

i've never had much luck with ANY winchester ammo in my rifles, i try to use norma, hornady for my 6.5's when it's on special , federal has been pretty reliable for me all round in all my rifles. you might have something with the chamber. the brass looked really blown out near the neck. another poster on this forum Old Bloke said he had some issues with brand new sako's. not in 17 hmr but. have only heard good about the lithgows. cant remember who it was, but a poster on the forum with a lithgow in 22 mag reported with photo's it was a tack driver

i got two 22lr's, one is a CZ supermatch 452 2E ( brno model 2 ). 12 groove barrel, factory bedded, adjustable trigger. shoots down to 20 mm groups on average with eley sport ammo. i have a thing for old german made Krico rifles. bought a well used one made in the early 60's from what i can tell, with a worn trigger pin so the trigger moves side to side a fair bit. would ya beleive that old german gun will out shoot the CZ and is not as ammo fussy. ya just don't know sometimes :unknown:

I purchased a brand new Ruger lever rifle in .17HMR.The only ammo available at the time were Hornady 17 grain with a red ballistic tip.Never had a split neck or extraction issue ever.Fabulous little rifle and super accurate

I have a blanket rule with Winchester Shet, put it down. Nothing but dramas after having a few hang fires spli neck galore and seemed to fowl the barrell more tan others. Made the move to a17 by CCI love the stuff and to date havent had one split neck or problems ejecting. Plus it is nice and consistent in the accuracy department.

so it's all agreed, winchester ammo is crap . it's very eractic in 22 mag i know that for a fact. sometimes it would shoot great, other times awful. depending on caliber ,and whether or not it's on special, norma and hornady seem to do well in my rifles with federal as a back up
