Scope magnification for new rimfire

Post by scoobs » 26 Mar 2018, 4:22 pm

so i may have just bought a lithgow la101 :drinks: :drinks:

now. im a newbie to rimfires. what is everyones thoughts on scope magnification?
the fun will be for bunnies, cans, termite mounds and for punching paper at the range.
my choices so far:
bushnell rimfire 3-12x40
bushnell rimfire 6-18x40
bushnell trophy extreme 2.5-15x50 30mm tube
bushnell trophy extreme 6-24x50 3mm tube (i have one of these on my 22-250 and its great)

the rimfire scopes are both under $200 too

thoughts?

Hi scoobs...
My opinion is go to 12x on a rimfire zoom--so 4-12 is good--thats what i have on mine & is plenty good enough for paper & bunnies.

If you want to really get anal about target shooting then get a higher like up to 18x.

As for the trophy extreme scopes you mention--i think they are too big & heavy for a rimfire...i have the same as you on a tikka lite in 204 & i think its getting to the unbalanced feel, but its always shot from the car or bonnet so i put up with it...
I also have the 2.5-15 on a t3 22-250 & again its weighty, but i just wanted to try an illuminated reticle.
Not sure if you remember ive mentioned in the past but i think those scopes are barely worth their money & have way too thick reticle--too thick for 22lr in my opinion.
So my suggestion is...
*stick with a "wun inche choob" ( ) 25mm tube on a 22lr. Keep the weight down on it.
*3x or 4x-14x for general shooting.
...or...
*18x plus power if going into target shooting the likes of 100m etc.

Cheers

That sort of weight is a different story on a heavy barrel mate  ...the rifles i have those scopes on are quick pointers... (sporter barrels & very light rifles).

& forgive my ignorance, but whats a "$80 ACOG off wish"...?

For all that the bushnell trophy extreme 2.5-15x50 30mm tube seems like the right magnification range to me.

I appreciate my x12 on my la101 - it’s an accurate rifle that can realize that amount of zoom

I run a 4x40 tasco on the brno, seems to get the job done fine out to around 80mts, I don't like side focus or any other fucus crap on rifles as a rule (used to think they were the ants pants but these days I like simple) - much quicker to get a shot off as a rule rather than trying to focus a scope to get a shot off. :unknown:

They are high mounts mate, can you put your head on the comb with the eyes closed and then open them and find a clear sight picture or do you find you have to move the head around to do so?
