LA102 in 6.5 CM

Post by JimTom » 23 Apr 2018, 5:39 pm

I just read today that Lithgow are releasing the LA102 in 6.5CM. Is this common knowledge or new info?
Reckon it would be worth owning one?

They had already announced the LA105 in 6.5 creedmoor. So I quess is was a logical step...
Waiting on the 260 Remington fans.
I like the Creedmoor and think it was a good calibre to chamber their rifle. I only saw it was released (announced) today.

Yes I had read about the LA105 being chambered in 6.5CM, as you said, cartridge suits the 105. Perhaps they have chambered in the 102 as they see potential for hunting applications?

6.5 has been the hunting calibre of choice in Europe for over 100 years. The Creedmoor will match or beat a 308 in energy past 400m (depending on projectile/load) for less powder, recoil, windage and drop, and do almost anything a 243 can do for longer barrel and brass life - all in a short action with inherent accuracy.

You can take your pick of 6.5 projectiles from 85-160gr, small and large primer brass, and excellent factory match ammo - and even buy 140gr Federal hunting ammo for as little as $25 a box. I always liked the 6.5x55 Swede, but the 6.5CM is already cheaper and more readily available. I wouldn't even consider 260 Rem these days as the Creedmoor has pretty much made it obsolete.

Just my 2c and why I went 6.5CM over all the other mid-calibres. I think the days of it being restricted to F Class/benchrest are long gone.

Yeah nice one Flyer. That’s why I picked it over .243. Looking forward to picking mine up and developing loads for it.
Just out of curiosity what size projectiles are you using mate?

I haven't picked mine up yet - waiting on the license. When I do, I'll be looking at the 143gr ELD-X or 140 ELD-Ms with 2209 and small-primer Lappy brass.

G’day mate.

Apologies for being a nuisance and excuse my ignorance but what is the advantage of using small rifle primers over large rifle primers?
I see the 308 Palma brass is small rifle, I am assuming for target shooting, does this assist accuracy?

The three main advantages are being able to run higher pressures (the primer and flash hole being the weak pressure point in the brass), getting more consistent burn compared to large primers (better inherent accuracy), and longer brass life due to the small primer pockets staying tighter longer (less likely to deform or blow out).

There's a video on Youtube here where they reload a 6.5CM small-primer Lapua cartridge 20 times without signs of failure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmDFtQ4DJmA

I've also got lots of BR4 primers for my 223 I can use :D

Nope. I emailed them about lefties and they responded that the market wasnt big enough to warrant the production, or something to that effect.

Not just brought out.

When they released the LA101 it had a LH version.

I bought mine in 2015.

Yep. And they released the llefty rimfire about 6 months after the righty 101.
There was talk that the 102 would see a lefty released once initial orders for right handers were filled, similar to the 101 roll out.
After waiting and waiting, i emailed them and got the response that there are no plans for a lefty centerfire. Maybe they don't sell as many lefty 101s as they thought so aren't going down thatvtrack with the 102.
I was very disappointed.

Why?
Took me a few weeks to teach myself to shoot left handed. A few years later it still feels a bit mumted but i can shoot straight and see a hell of a lot better out of my left eye at distance.
Must say, i did enjoy being able to go back to right handed shooting at a clay shoot/fun day we had last year. Wont bothe getting a lefty shot gun but will stick to lefties for all my hunting rifles. Fclass rifles will all be rh action in lh stock..... works very well.

I just grew up right handed but left eye dominant so I use right handed rifles on my left and work a bolt just as quick standing but quicker than most of a pod .

this is 9 shots off a bipod at 50y

Yeah. I'm naturally a righty as well but i can't work the right bolt without completely losing my sight picture and a good hold on the rifle. It's much better for my pest control shooting using a lefty. Tried it the other way for 6 months or more before buying a lefty.

When I picked up my LA101 from the LGS the other week the owner of the shop mentioned he had been out at Lithgow Arms on a trade day. He said that he asked them about lefthanded centerfires and the reply was that they would need orders of 400 rifles before going ahead - which is apparently about 8 days production, not including tooling which is an extra couple of days- so we might be waiting a while- which is a real bummer as I will be in the market for a varmint style 243 or 6.5 cm in the next few months- looks like Finland will get the sale again

Looking at the platform for hunting since we have some 6.5 projectile choice now. Also the laminate + titanium version looks cool!

Anyone got theirs or an ETA?
