How much would you pay for Winchester 94 30-30 made in 1971?

Post by Ricohard » 29 Apr 2018, 5:31 pm

Im looking at buying a lever action 30-30. Friend of mine has a good looking Wincheste 94 30-30. I ran the serial numbers and found it it was made in 1971. So it definitely isnt a pre 64.
Im told a few scratches on the stock etc.

How much would you guys pay? Looking for rough prices.

depends on where you are too mate. i paid $800 for a 1974 made 30-30 in very good condition out of a gun shop. looked like it had hardly bin fired. from what i've seen around $600 for one in good condition seems to be a average price.

If your looking for context compared to what's on the market, there's a model 94 for sale in my local. I'm no sure what year it is. It's in reasonably good, but not very good condition, some scratches here and there, a couple of spots of surface rust on the receiver. The rear sight has been removed and a low profile red dot fitted. The shop is asking $600

Whatever you're willing to pay is what you will end up paying, you decide where the limit is and stick to it. It's not the only one left in existence, if he's asking more than you are willing to pay give it a miss I say, I'm sure there are more out there worth buying in your price range.

Bought my 94 brand new in 1979 for $129 and still have it today. Best gun I've ever owned and has been worked hard over the years. Recently got offered $600 for it and respectfully said "no way". I'm taking this one to the grave. If the one you're looking at is worth the money to you, just buy it. You'll never own a finer firearm. Mind you, I may be a tad biased........
The pen may be mightier than the sword, but personally I prefer the .30/30 Winchester.

$400-600 is about market price. Looks in pretty good but not fantastic shape so around $500 maybe.

Some time in the mid-80's, Winchester went to the hammer that sits at the half-cock when at rest, and my 1986 '94 has the (much crappier) simpler sights(no ramp on the foresight and rear blade very light/easy to damage).
Personally, I'd view an earlier one as being a better-value rifle.

I'd guess somewhere around $600 is likely a fair price for one in good condition.

From my serial number list, I'd say YOM as being 1972? The list seems to show the last serial number at the end of each year, and the last recorded for 1971 was supposed to be 3557385, wheras end of 1972 was 3806499.

Besides,With a shave and a haircut, my akubra on me head , and my ‘94 chinwester over one shoulder, I reckon I do look a little like John Wayne . And if I drink whiskey I would put Rooster Cogburn to shame

yup mate, it's a different world over here. a lot of our stuff is overpriced compared to the U.S ,in some ways it's a great qaulity of life for a average workin' guy, but it's going downhill on account of greedy politicians, banks and a welfare system that's being exploited by career bludgers and "pretend" refugees.i've just about had enough. do ya think the NRA would sponsor me for a greencard ?

That might be true for a lot of guns but there are many that can be had for the same price or cheaper. When you see the price of a custom gun on Accurate Shooter for instance they are around the $5000 US+ mark. The actions seems to be around the same price $1700-$2300US barrels and stocks similar prices. So at the top end I would say they are similar at the everyday and American made rifles yes they are cheaper in the US. When it comes to any European rifles I think they are at least as expensive if not a bit more in the US than in Aus.

Edited to be clearer about comparison with US prices

Sorry to say it, European guns might be more expensive, but I reckon the quality is higher in a lot of cases. jMHO. I own 2 American made rifles, a 1974 made 30-30, and a custom mod 70 chinwester in 6.5x55, control feed out of the FN plant in the US. Luv them both, but from what I’ve seen a lot of American rifles in general are built to a price these days. Again, right or wrong, JMHO

you are right bigrich but if you look each maker makes guns of greater price but most are what is thought of as entry leval here.
the savage axis the ruger american and the rem 710 or 783 are on them lines but they would last years or the rest of your life.

yeh wrenchman ,the rifles you refer to are good "bang for your buck" and probably will do the same job as a european rifle at twice the price.you do get better build qaulity for your money but, right or wrong, i would rather pay the extra for a sako than buy a remington. my own european rifles are 1960's and 70's german krico's in 22lr , 22 hornet , and a deluxe 22-250 with a match trigger. these old classics have a better fit and finish than a lot of modern rifles in my opinion. my modern euro rifle is a weihrauch 22lr. have owned a 22 mag with hogs back stock in this brand and the build qaulity impresses the hell out of me. if i had the money, i would buy anshutz but. i suppose to a degree, in pre and post war australia european rifles were more available here than in the US. BRNO, anshutz , krico , voere 22lr and other varmit calibers were very common back when. that's not to say winchester 94's, 70's weren't available and were a great rifle. but old sako's and tikka's have almost a legendary repution in OZ. that has built a preference for stuff like tikka t3's , which is probably THE best value for money rifle out here. in my humble opinion. sorry to get off topic
