Hornady 325 FTX and ADI powder

Post by philjt » 28 Jun 2016, 5:06 pm

Hi All,

Recently bought a Marlin 1895SBL, have a couple of boxes of factory ammunition but intend on reloading. I have reloaded several calibres but never 45-70.
I use ADI powders and will be loading Hornady 325 FTX projectiles. Not after insane velocities and after reading the ADI manual the powder of choice would be 2219. I notice that 2207 is acceptable also but would like to know if anyone has had experience with 2219 and this particular (or similarly weighted) projectile.

Thanks

2207 will do it, faster burning power though so probably not the most ideal option for what you want.

Starting load with 2219 will see you pushing about 2,200fps if you follow the ADI data for modern levers, that's at the higher end of the range as far as velocity/recoil goes for the 45-70 and it's variants.

If you really want a lower velocity load look at working one up with Trailboss. I don't have any data off hand but you should be able to get a load working somewhere in the 1,000 - 1,100fps range if that's of interest?

I've loaded for that exact same model rifle and projectile. Best I found in mine was 51.5gr of 2219 with a COL of 2.590" but make sure the cases are trimmed to 2.040" as the 325gr FTX has a longer Ogive. Expect a velocity around the 1951fps range so it'll have a bit of kick but nothing to worry about.
How's my posting?

Phil, I was using the 325FTX in an 18" GBL.

I used 50g of AR2207. MV was 2020fps and it would put 5 touching at 75y using a scope. CCI 200 primer and Starline brass.

I seated them below the cannelure and gave them a firm crimp with the Lee FCD, to ensure they cycled through the action.

The only bullet I've used that was as accurate was the Sierra 300g HP.

ADI provide data for it, it's a suitable powder.

Only one way to find out, give it a crack ;)

i was looking for powder opinions before i start reloading for my 45-70 and i came across this old topic . bigpete put a pic on this of a letter from uncle nick .
i got to thinking, how old is uncle nick ? i considered him a "old fella" when i started playing around with swede mausers in around '86,'87 . i looked up his name , and found a reference on a book website where they list the author ,one nick harvey, as being born in 1931 ! my god . is uncle nick 90 and still reloading and pulling a trigger ? what a champ

back to topic, i have 2207, 2219 , BM2 , 2208 . i'm looking at loading 300gn hp to begin with , 2207 is a easy choice . has anyone else had any luck with other powders :unknown:

:drinks: :drinks:

Hi All,
Bit late on the thread, but I've used 2208 with great success. Around the 52gr mark with 350gr flat nose Hornady Interlocks. Magnum primers and Starline brass. Sourced the recipe from American threads on forums based on Varget loads. Initially I wasn't getting a good, consistent burn. Changed over to the magnum primers and it made the world of difference.
Never put them over a chronograph, but they absolutely fly through the air, and as I use the rifle for pig hunting, it certainly does the job.
Best group I've achieved at the range (not that the rifle see's a range very often) was around the size of the top of a can of beer at 75m. When you're making such large holes, I was more than happy with that.
Cheers. Love the 45-70.
