32 HBWC lube / powder coat?

Post by queeg730 » 13 Sep 2024, 1:02 pm

Folks,
Subject says it all.... should I just load these as is without lube (lead), or allox lube them, or powder coat them?
I already powder coat 9mm cast projectiles, but with the 32s being so soft and going so slow, is there any need to do anything to them?

I'm shooting .32 ISSF Centre Fire 25 metres at about 750 FPS.

I wouldn't shoot them unlubed, shake them in Alox or PC them - at that velocity I would probably just lube them. I would also PC some though and see if they shoot more accurately.

At very least lube.

PC is likely best option tho. As BR said, PC a few to try.

Will be setting up to PC myself in a few weeks.

Do you just shake and bake?

That's all I do. Roll a handful of bullets in a tub with a little powder for maybe 30 seconds, dump them onto a silicone sheet and slide into the toaster oven. The real trick is getting the temp right, too high will give you little lead puddles. I recommend avoiding touching the bullets, throw them from the mould onto the towel, then straight into the powder tub. Some people use acetone with the powder, and/or adding plastic pellets to increase static - I haven't tried those ideas.

 How did you manage that?
Melting point is 327c.
PC only needs to be heated to 200c

I think if you set the oven up to bake 200 bullets, and then only put 20 in it puts a lot more heat into the lead?

Only happened once when I was making a small batch of bullets for testing. The settings on the oven have no direct relevence to the actual temperature inside, use a thermometer to measure it.

I have no idea off the top of my head, but it cost me $50 on Ebay some years back. If I can remember tomorrow I'll go up to the office and have a look at it.

Just lube with Alox, less work and messing about. PC will be very unlikely to give you better accuracy then lubed. I don't shoot ISSF anymore and usually just shot 98-2 lead cast with Alox lube sized to .313 or Lapua 98g HBWC which had a dry lube. I have seen PC cause sticking in some barrels, but PC these days seems to be much better. I used a Pardini which had a .314 barrel.
