Bosnian primers

Post by Clintwoodz » 17 Jan 2025, 10:30 am

Hi all is it just me or these Bosnian Ginex primers don't sit flush with starline brass? Some of them do but rarely, and most of them you gotta push real hard on the press to seat, I can't imagine how hard would be on hand priming tool. I did measure them with caliper and it seems to be within spec? Should I be reaming starline brass?

edit - it's 38SPL using Lee challenger press. Seems like these primers are overprice POS junk

Have you taken the edge off the pocket so they can funnel in?

Even better, use a pocket cutter to cut all the pockets to consistent depth and diameter and put a square corner in there, then chamfer the edge.

Possibly because they are small rifle primers and not small pistol primers. Small rifle will have slightly thicker brass in the cup than small pistol and might also experience misfires.

I have used over 3000 spp and a couple of times had difficulty seating them. I deprime all my brass, ultasonic clean, use a primer pocket tool, then load. No problems since.

Like White River, Ginex are known to be a bit on the tight side.

I haven't used the Bosnian ones. I'm using S&B and Winchester SPP and SRP in .38 Special, no issue seating them in S&B, Win, Federal, Geco, Starline and some other odd brass I've picked up (I haven't cut the pockets as I haven't had any issue with the primer seating). I've put hundreds through three rifles with no issues but I had two light strikes in a Security Six this week. I don't know if they were rifle primers or if I seated them badly or perhaps the club's revolver isn't in great condition. They fired fine with a second hit so I'm guessing it was my fault.

I had to dash into town so I stopped at the gunshop and asked if they have primer stock yet. They have the RUAG RWS primers, so I grabbed 1000 SPP to test in the 9mm and .38. Only $200, which I was pleased about. I also asked what powders they have and they have some BM2, AR2217, and about four Reloader's, I think RL17 was one and RL25 was definitely one of them.

If I can find somebody with the Unis Ginex primers I'll grab some to test them out.

I was not willing to destroy my RCBS Universal hand primer on these s**t brand tight primers so I set up a Lee auto bench top unit. It is working fine and seating them all OK. Also safer as a hand primer with a tray full going off will go through the roof easily.

I found the talked up White River LR to be the worst, followed by the Ruag SR.
The Indian #34 LR were the pick and the only ones that I went back for a second box.

Got some Federals and surprise- surprise, they seat fine.
Propper known brands for me and I will use all the s**t first.

I have used both the small rifle and small pistol Ginex primers with absolutely no issues and also in both pistol (SR work fine in all my semi autos) and rifle loads. I have had no issues other than small pistol do not reliably fire in my worked S&W 686 on double action (single action they work fine fine).

No issues with seating, I use a Dillon press for both pistol and rifle reloading.

Using a press or Lee benchtop primer you can seat anything as you have miles of leverage.

I like using a good hand primer with some feel to just lightly seat the primers consistently.

CCI were never an issue but these new brands for shortage supplies are a new ball game.
Every LR White River primer had a ring mark from seating no matter how lightly I seated it.
They were so tight that it couldn't be avoided.
That's why I started thinking about the dangers if one ever went off and set the others in the tray off.
A bloke near de-gloved his fingers when it happened so it's a serious risk whatever the odds are.

They are pistol primers but like others have stated because I use press I just push over the thing like theres no tomorrow and it will go in, but in my case the primer doesn't sit flush with base of the rim somehow, luckily my colt python allows me to cock it with not so flush rim, but I did have some clearance issue when primer was sticking out a bit too much. At least all of them went bang :P

I might give that a shot as starline pockets might be shallow?

They do look like they are protruding a lot.

Perhaps try a claw hammer.

But this would seem a better solution:

I have a few hundred pieces of Starline and the primers I've been using don't sit high. I just loaded a batch with S&B small rifle primers last week. I used some of the RWS primers today in .38 and 9mm and they feel "soft" to me during seating. I'll fire them on Tuesday to ensure they run okay before loading up 1000 of them.

How is Starline working for you? I quite like it but it's been surprising me with short life in the .38's, I lost one again today, on its first firing - new brass. I'm hoping it's just a handful of bad ones being weeded out and the rest will last ten or more loads. These are _very_ light loads so it's not a pressure issue. Geco is the worst I'm using, I lose a few every firing. I've never bought Geco brass (or ammo) so they were probably given to me and may not have been "once-fired", they might have done some work already.
