H870 - What's it useful for?

Post by bladeracer » 28 Oct 2025, 9:59 am

I picked up a box of powders yesterday from a deceased estate. There's 8lb of H4831 which I can use in a lot of my rifles. Also cans of AR2207, AR2208 and partial cans of AS30N and IMR4064. But it also includes 6lb of H870 and 500gm of Norma Magnum Rifle - I'm guessing these are best suited to really heavy hitters, which I don't own. Anybody tried H870 in smaller chamberings, like 8x57mm or .30-06? I did a bit of a Google last night and saw reports of really bad fouling with H870, particularly with lighter bullets. Should I hang onto the 870 or try to find somebody else that could make better use of it?

H870 = AR2218, good for 50BMG and we use it for the 55 Boys. Really not much use for anything other than large magnums using heavy bullets.
